Thanks flitecontrol! I would take you up on that if you happen by. Getting the bike out of their shop is the first step. Does anyone have a link to part/parts that would be needed? These mechanics are under the impression that the parts were discontinued and are hard to find...

Yes.
The parts are still available. They are still used on the new Rebels.

From what I'm reading this looks like something I could manage with a strap wrench and a few other tools.
You probably can. I tore my bike and engine down to every last screw and spring, and rebuilt it. In one day, on a few concrete paver tiles in my front yard. No manual. The schematic provided by this forum was helpful.

Don't be afraid to jump into this bike. It's simple and hard to screw up. Once you do it you realize "Hell, all that apprehension over nothing! That was way easier than I thought!" Psyching yourself out is the biggest hurdle. You gotta be a real special kind of stupid to wind up in any serious trouble.

Hi! I was wondering if anyone who has done the starterclutch job would be able to tell me how much side-to-side play is normal for the large starter sprocket located behind the starter clutch . thanks, paco

Well I don't like the sound of that. I've got about a quarter inch of play between the starter clutch and the crankcase, with the flywheel aligned and torqued. UUUGGH!!! Looks like I'm back to square one.

I never took the sprocket completely off the shaft or removed the coverplate, looks like i'll be tearing it down again tomorrow, yippeee!!! thanks for your help GuitarMan. Was just looking at the parts breakdown and don't recall ever seeing a washer on the flywheel bolt, wondering if one of the previous owners had this torn down before.

Dusting off an old thread ;)
I found an 86 Rebel for $300 bucks. The electronics were shot completely (Every light, horn, charging system, battery you name it).
BUT, if you push start it, the engine runs like a champ. So I picked it up to give my girlfriend as a trainer / starter bike.

I've repaired all of the electrical issues and am left with just an issue with the starter. When I hit the starter button the engine occasionally sounds like it wants to self destruct. Some times the starter just spins and engine doesn't... so I know the starter clutch is on its way out.
Question is when these things fail is it usually just the rollers and springs?
I can order a set of springs from Ron Ayers for around $10, or I can order the whole clutch assembly off of Ebay for $50 New One Way Bearing Starter Clutch for Honda Rebel 250 CMX250 CMX 250 82 09 | eBay

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I'd try the rollers and springs first. The rollers can flat spot a little causing them not to seat properly.

Hello. I have a 94 rebel 250 and my starter clutch has also gone. I live in Australia and would like to buy a kit and do it myself. Where is the best place to buy one? And also a detailed description on how to replace would be very handy :) thank u in advance

Ronayers.com is usually a good place to look at the parts diagrams for the bike... pricing is decent there as well. (My local Honda shop did a price match, which was nice).

Still haven't rebuilt mine yet as it decided it wants to work 95% of the time, as long as the bike is started in Neutral....

So letting the GF learn to ride it, and I'll tear it down on a rainy weekend.

can you provide a link of where to purchase the parts for the starter clutch? Or the Diagram link?
