Hey fellas, just bought a 1985 rebel 250. LOVE IT. noticed the choke cable has been cut off! doesn't seem to really need it. It starts up great cold and runs like a champ. is there a way to adjust the choke without the cable?? I've looked everywhere and cannot find where it previously connected too. The idle is a little high so I wonder if it's stuck open? Not sure! any input is greatly appreciated! thanks guys!

WELCOME !!! New myself, so will leave this to the experts. My 2009 model 250 has a black plastic knob on the right hand side of carb. that lets you adjust idle speed. However like you are thinking, the enrichment valve may be open a little. Expert advice will soon follow, and welcome.

The choke isn't really a choke, is an enrichment valve. It makes the mixture richer rather than choking off air.
If your plunger is intact and in place, you can run without he cable.
If the plunger is gone, you are on full enrichment and that is a problem.

On he left hand side of the carb near the front is where the cable goes in to the carb.
There is a plastic cap that holds it. That cap need to be there .
Here are a few drawing to help you out.

I'd order what you need to be sure the choke is off and incase you ever have to start it in colder weather.

I found it! half the cable is still attached with silicone all over the top, I guess so it doesn't move? I wonder if i could install a push n pull choke like ezbikekid or just replace the cable.
If that cable is still attached on the inside it would mean the choke is full on. Because it starts up with no hesitation.
It's bad to run the motor like this ?

If the parts are still inside the hole the plunger should be spring loaded to keep the choke off but who knows for sure untill you take what's left out? I'd replace the cable and keep the lever on the bars if the other parts are still there to swap over to the new cable.
It's amazing how people ghetto rig some of these Rebels inorder to sell them to others.

That is so true... I am amazed at what I find when I start tearing into a bike.. and sometimes the ghetto rig or 'quick fix' was actually more difficult to do than just doing it right...

$700 that is a good deal..

I got it for $700 with 35K so I don't think it was TOO bad of a deal. I just like things to work the way they're supposed to like you awesome people. I guess thats why we're all here after all..

Yep, the dufus I bought mine from cut a hole in the airbox cover. The cover is needed to hold the spring clip in place that holds the air fliter in place. Without the cover, the clip can come loose and the filter won't have a tight seal against the carburetor.

!!! beware of butchers !!!

hey bma852 I would replace either the cable or put a plunger style one in. B-Rock also has one of those plunger ones too.

I would clean out the silicone mess, get the necessary parts, and fix it right. If it turns out that they disabled it because there is a problem with the carburetor, you'll know in time to deal with it before cold weather. Otherwise, it's just a matter of a few parts. None outrageously expensive that I know of. The sooner you know what is going on with it, the better.

What kinda mpgs were you getting. If they are in the 70s it would be a sign that the choke is off and not running rich.

I will reset the trip next fill up and find out after she's empty. Until then I will do it right and install the cable the way it should be.
Thanks to all who posted, yall are great!
