OK, Your CDI controls the ignition system. To simplify it our Rebels dry fire. Both spark plugs fire at the same time on both the compression and exhaust stroke. This eliminates the need for a distributor, gear, cap and rotor. You can switch your plug wires and the Rebel will still run just fine.

The B/Y wires on the first gen. tell the coil when to fire and do the same thing at the same time. So by splicing 2 & 4 together makes no difference.

On the second gen. CDI they have included a kick stand safety switch. This is now wire No. 4 and it needs to be grounded to complete the cercut.

Got it! I knew about the dry fire bit but not the kick stand idiot trap. Sure glad I found this site before I started tinkering.

"If you want to you can try to re-invent the wheel. But why bother?"
What DDD (dear departed dad) would say when he caught us boys devising an elaborate solution to a simple problem

Clutch switch should if the clutch diode is functioning.

I see this is old however I seem to have a bad CDI on my CM 250 C, and I was wondering if these are compatible with my bikes CDI? Apparently they are discontinued and the ones I see online people want almost more than I paid for my bike lol. Either that or can I rewire to use a different one???

Can you post some detailed photos of your CDI and it's connectors as well as wiring harness pugs? I will try to locate a wiring diagram to see if it can't be sorted out.

*pre warning I pretty much found out the reason why the "CDI" wasnt reading right... see if you can see my funny blunder....

The plugs are two separated female connections one with the three prongs and
the other with four.

In my fit of arrogance in doing so well my first time ever trying to work on bikes I over looked the fact that if wires are hanging by a thread under some electrical tape that you are so foolishly not looking for yet... you may be missing the problem.... :S

LOL

Haven't went through the harness and such yet.... decided since it didn't start I would strip it down bare and paint it....

I'll dig into it tomorrow morning first thing. I wanted to go through and clean it all anyway. I guess I'll see how bad it is. You may be right but I am crossing my fingers. Aren't the engines the same in the rebels? Maybe the harnesses are also. Sorry guys I'm not the best at this stuff. Studied for a week and went to town :)

The wire harness will be different than the Rebel's harness. If you need a harness you may be able to find one on eBay.
