So I rode up to Fox 4 news on wed. to do a spot for the Real Bikers Wear Pink ride on this Sunday! It's about a 100 miles round trip. Tha shoot went great ,so we headed back home the long way to get some more miles in & I started to get vibrations so I pulled over & found my chain was a bit loose. I remembered a NAPA Auto parts store in Spring Hill KS. so I limped it to dat store. It's a real small store without a lot of parking space, so I pulled under a tree not far & insite of the front door. In the window was a sign that read "we loan tools" !! I was like Cool & went in. I tolded the dude that I broke down & if I could Use a cresant wrench to loosing my axel nut & tighting my chain? He said "we dont loan those kind of tools" I said Im right in front of your door Im not gonna take it home I will leave you my drivers Lic. I just need it for 3to 4 min!! Again he said We dont lend those tools out!! To make a long story short I was forced to buy one for $7.oo !!!! I will never buy anthing from NAPA ever again !!!!!

Those kind of experiences are why I started carrying a road kit of tools in all my vehicles. Good thing I've "aged out" a bit. In my younger days I'd have had a hard time resisting the impulse to sling the wrench back into the shop through the front window while shouting "Thanks for the loaner" as I pulled out.

I would have ripped the sign out of the window :evilgrin0030:

Right, because everyone knows that a crescent wrench only works on automotive fasteners.

We used to call them Red Neck metric wrench sets.

The cause of my beginning to keep a road tool kit in my vehicles was when I broke down in adjacent state which will remain unidentified and the mechanic at the closest service station told me I would have to get it towed to the next town because he didn't have any wrenches would fit my Datsun PU. That was long ago which is why I don't make an issue of the state because a similar thing could have happened in any state at the time, but served as a good heads up as to what one can count on when on the road in unfamiliar territory.

Dunno about NAPPA, but AutoZone had an unconditional money back gauranty, you coulda bought the wrench, used it, then returned it for a full refund
That was actualy how they built their loan tool inventory, in the non specialty tools
However the guy wasn't realy lying or anything, the 'loaner tool program' is for specialty tools
How do I know? I worked for an AP store for a while

Napa is individually owned so the guy was looking at his own expense for an out of towner he figured he'd never see again. Why I wouldn't blanket boycott NAPA stores. However a proprietor with that sort of attitude is unlikely to prosper in a service dependent industry. He makes most of his money dealing with garages and his attitude will catch up with him there pretty quickly.

I lost a belt about a mile out of a town I didn't live in once.
Walked to the NAPA store and bought and new belt.
The fellow there took his break early and brought a tool set off the shelf, and drove me back to my car and helped me install the belt!

I think its down to the individual. Some folks realize we're all in this together, and some folks don't.
I really try to be one of the folks who do.

don't judge all NAPA stores by this one. NAPA stores are franchised and not all franchise owners are the same. Our local NAPA parts store is wonderful. The guy owns three in the area. His main one is the one closest to us. Been doing business with them for 40 years. Great customer service. Great knowledge and quite often some great laughs.

Yes I know !! I was just really upset that day ! but I will never go to that one . I did call that store & ask to talk to the manager & low an behold it was the same guy!! I gave him a piece of my mind & he said he dont care & I could call the corp office if I wanted to . Just told him it ain't worth the time & hope he can live with leaving someone broke down on the road over a $7.00 wrench. My oil filter that I buy from the napa store by my house cost more then that !!! Im over it now !! lol

When I got my first chop , I went on a two hundred mile trip and was almost home . At this point I was about six miles from home no auto stores in sight , I had just made my turn and had to go six miles down the road to get home and front tire went flat and front end was wobbling all over ,so I pushed her last six miles home, taught me good lesson ......always carry toolkit .

Needless to say ,was glad to have spare tire and tools at home . After putting spare tire on, well I did have to take her out for a test run, tire was fine but I rode her for two hours before going home again . Lol
