Carborator: changing screw type?

I want to change the screws on the carborator (not the adjustment screws). The screws that you have to remove to open up the carborator. I want to change them from the easly stripped pillips screws to ones that look like the one in the picture. with a pillips or flat head fitting in the middle but hexagon wrech sides.

Could someone give me a link where I could buy such screws. Or if you could tell me the specs of these screws so I can look up where to get some. I usally buy things on ebay because they are cheaper most of the time.

Using a hand impact driver usually avoids damaging the screw heads. They are cheap, and anyone who works on motorcycles needs one. 7 Piece Reversible Impact Driver Set

Impact Screwdriver Set with Case

I get stainless Allen head carb screws at the local fastener specialty store. You may also find them at Ace hardware, Lowes , Home Depot, etc.

If you can't find a supplier, I can get you a set for $2.50 plus the cost of mailing them to you.

Thanks for the info on the impact driver set.
Now you just go and get "carb screws" no special threading or anything else or other specifics?

Yeah I will probably do tha tomorrow or this weekend.

but good news I got my carb apart (which was hard because the person who had tried last time kinda striped the screws :-( ) and the carb is now soaking in chem dip I got at walmart for $21 not rubber or plastic peices or anything just the main body and anything internal except for the float bowl bottom because I can't get the gasket out :-/

You can pick the bowl gasket out CAREFULLY with a toothpick, they use some sorta rubber cement when they assemble them at the factory. Don't know how old or what kinda shape your carb is in, but its not uncommon to have to replace the bowl gasket, $10 ish at a dealer. :greetings10:

Thank you for posting that list SWAMPRABBIT.

I have a few JIS driver bits, the kind like you you use in a changeable tip screwdriver or a cordless screw gun. Unfortunately I have no idea where I got them from.

Just a note here on the screws that Honda uses in these bikes.

They are not Phillips but JIS which stands for "Japanese Industry Standard" and the screwdrivers are totally different on the way they grip the screw.

Apparently the Phillips screw was designed to "cam out" easily as part of the design and there is a story behind that too. The JIS dont' "cam" out easily and when you have the correct screwdrivers, it is amazing the difference they make to removing the JIS screws.

For most on the forum it is easier to just replace the screws with the "Allen" head type as they are a common style and are an excellent design.

For those who work on these bikes on a regular basis, it is well worth the $45.00 approx. for a set of the "Vessel" JIS screwdrivers that are meant for these fasteners. I just picked up a set of three different sizes from a US supplier and I am really happy with the results.
