Yet another noob question. I appologize, this is my first bike. 85 rebel 250 and I just want to make sure its maintained properly. So I learned how to tighten the chain, got a repair manual too. I see the "go, no go" sticker on the frame to indicate when to replace the chain, but im not sure WHAT is supposed to go past the line to indicate it's stretched too much. The manual wasnt clear either. Im going to (try to) upload a picture of the chain in hope someone can point this out to me. Thanks all.

there is usually an arrow on the adjuster that you can see in that Window on the swingarm
A batter way to tell is ti pinch and pull the chain away fro the rear sprocket if the chain pulls more than half a tooth height its time to replace the chain

I wouldn't go by the sticker. Try pulling a link of the chain away from the rear of the sprocket at the 3 oclock position. A new chain cannot be pulled out. A worn out chain may come out as much as 1/8 inch. Smaller movements indicate some internal wear on the chain pins causing the chain pitch to be longer than the sprocket pitch which cannot change.

Not urgent, but that's quite badly worn. Sprockets and chain should be replaced soon.

That rear axle and adjuster assembly is installed incorrectly. The axle is supposed to be on the left in your picture, that's why the sticker makes no sense; the hash marks on the adjuster to be used as a guide for the sticker are installed on the wrong side.



Not sure what the implications are of this odd installation method, it may be because the chain is the wrong length or so stretched they couldn't get it to work in the correct installation location.

Good to know, thank you. It looks like I will be installing a new chain and sprockets.... correctly. The bike is in pretty good shape for 30 years old, and starts immediately and runs perfect. I want to keep it that way.

While I'm replacing them I was thinking of changing to a 15 tooth front and 32 tooth rear. I hate the feeling that I need to be in 5th gear at 35 - 40 MPH!

I've read good things, worth it or not?

So... when I replace the chain, I should get 520 size 108 link... sealed, o-ring, x ring, heavy duty, standard....?? so many choices. Just want to make sure it will be the right thing.

Get an O or X ring chain from a reputable manufacturer such as DID, RK, etc. Some times, an X-ring chain will be less expensive than an O-ring, but they last about the same miles.

I've often found 520 chains with more than 108 links for less than the 108 link chains. I have a chain break tool, and just remove the extra lengths. A grinder, file or Dremel tool can be used to remove the flattened end of a chain rivet and the right size pin punch or nail (cut the pointed end off) will knock it out, so making the correct length isn't all that difficult.
