Top speed so far was around 85 indicated. That's faster than I need to go, but I wanted to see if she'd do it. Much of top end on a Rebel has to do with shifting technique. It doesn't have the torque to accelerate much in fifth gear.

Mine weighed about 310 pounds new, but I think it has gained about twenty pounds since I quit smoking.

There is no high-tech computer management on a Rebel. It uses a pretty straightforward carburetor. I'm with flitecontrol on the tank vent being the most likely suspect.

The average of a 2 way run on the same road is the only way to get an accurate top speed. Downhill with a tailwind doesn't tell us much.

My favorite kind of hill for speed is downhill both ways. I prefer uphill both ways for twisties.

A stock Rebel will run wide open for as long as you can stand to ride it. It will sound like the engine is going to blow up, but it won't .Feed it gas and oil as needed. If you get creative with cone filters, shorty pipes, etc, YMMV. These machines have been precisely engineered for weight and cost.
