A biker coworker of mine with a shadow 1100 recommended I use the highest octane (95?) as it supposedly works better in the bike. Having never cared what I put in my car, I always went for whatever is cheapest. Since his recommendation I've only put the high octane in but does it really make a difference to anyone else?

Not a bit.
As long as there is no preignition (spark knock) you are fine.

Searching the forum can be difficult. Never worry about asking something here. This isn't one of those places that will chastise you for asking something that was asked before.

its like n00b heaven. nothing more irritating then asking a question and getting 17 replies saying "use the search function". if you take the time to type that you could have just answered the damn question. i thought they were message boards and discssion forums not archive boards. i find i like this place more and more.

Don't apologize.. this is always a good topic to bring up now and again.. There is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation out there...

For me, when I pull up to a pump I avoid the 10% ethanol even if it means paying a bit more for it.. the ethanol really gums things up... So, my priority in selection is to avoid ethanol at all costs... I even once pulled in to a station with my fuel light on and on reserve, all they had was ethanol added gas so I actually road on down the road a bit and fortunately at the next station I was able to get non-ethanol gas.. and I believe I rolled in on my last drop of fuel and fumes... but it was worth it..

Also, I have heard many say they use the higher price gas because it 'cleans' the system.. Well, again, I prefer to just add seafoam to my tank to keep things clean, along with a good fuel filter.. I haven't really run the numbers but I feel that I save in the long run...

Another that I do that helps, is regular oil changes and clean air filters..
In my experience and opinion, my money is better spent on the seafoam, fuel filters, oil and air filter than on higher priced higher octane fuel...

I swear by the stuff, I had a 1989 chevy blazer that I sold in good running condition with 350,000 miles on it. I only put chevron gas in [when I lived in Tennessee, there was a Chevron on every corner. My mechanic/teacher told me I had the cleanest engine he had ever seen. The biggest thing mechanically I had to do to it was replace the seal on the oil pan. Aesthetically, the thing was falling apart, but thats a different story.

I would say chevron with techron is just as good as gas with seafoam, but if it feels like its getting gunky, go ahead and run a few ounces of seafoam too. its not like it would hurt anything.

Not sure if the Techron does all that Sea Foam does; fuel stabilizer, oil additive/top end cleaner, etc., in addition to cleaning carbs/injectors. But it sounds like it is a good cleaning agent.
