In addition to providing some dirt and rain protection, the fender also acts as a fork brace.

I would add that the absence of a rear fender, or an abbreviated rear fender, is also unpleasant. I had a bobber briefly- i did not have the parts then to put it back to stock:( it was very unpleasant to ride. I sold it for a cheap price.

btw im asking since im getting a knobby front tire and i dont know if the knobbies will interfere with the fender. what i might do is make my own riser for it

Mine doesnt have a fender and dont notice any ill effects. BUT the only current bike to compare it to is my Harley Bagger...so really a valid comparison. I can see the bit of "bracing" the fender could/would provide though. but if that became a concern the fact that one can build their own bobber lends me to believe they can also build an item to act as a brace on the forks.

FWIW knobbies for street use opens up a whole 'nuther can of worms in addition to the no fender issues, meaning handling issues versus simple unpleasantries. ;)
