Got my rebel running good and to it out for a ride
I have read that people run there bike 60 + with no problems
At 40 my sounded like the rpms might be pretty high

My question is, how many gears does an 87 rebel have, I am only finding 4 and I thought there was 5. Can anyone confirm for me.

Is this fixable, assuming there is 5 or is it time for a new transmission?

I see that it should have 5
Is there anything that could keep it from going into 5th

It is five.
There should be nothing in the way. One down, four up.
Its possible that the linkage needs alignment.

Thanks BG
Any quick tips on how to do that?
I have a service manual, guess it's time to start reading

The lock nuts get loosened and you turn the rod until the levers are parallel.
Here's Cagie's diagram.

Make sure you are counting gears and not just shifts because once you take off you will only shift 4 times to get into 5th gear.

I'm now having this problem too. Except on a 1998 model. One down, two up. All I can get in is third :S.

Do I need to re-allign the tube that runs along from the gear stick end to the gear box end?
