I know that Honda only produced the 450 for 2 years, but I'm wondering if the production numbers were way low. I ask because they seem to be a bit in short supply. Anybody got a clue how many were built, and how that number compares to a normal run of 250's?

I have tried to find that out myself, as I own an 86 450 (bought it new). The production number of my bike is 1101 and it was made in Japan. I don't know if any were made here or not. You can look at the VIN plate on the neck...the last numbers are the production number of that bike (at least on the 450).

I don't think it is any lower than a new model being introduced, just the "problems" with H-D and the fact that with the 450, most new owners didn't want to upgrade as quickly as with the 250. (IMHO)

I have a copy of the book, "Honda Motorcycle Identification Guide 1959-2000". For the 86 Model 450, it lists V.I.N. numbers for both the California model and the model for the other 49 states, so in effect, there are 2 sets of serial numbers for the 450. BTW, this book is an excellent reference source for Honda M/C fans. Still though, it doesn't list production quantities.

Not sure if there's a way of knowing, but thanks guys!

Has anyone tried contacting Honda of Japan?
Yes many years ago, I don't recall who but they said they were told "production numbers are not available on any of our products".

There is an article in BSH magazine this month with a custom Honda Magna. They actually say "production numbers are not available on any of our products" in the article (they were trying to deduce how many of a certain type of Magna were made...)

Best bet is to compile a list of 86-87 450 VINs listing only the last six numbers to get an idea. We have a first year model thread over at Rebel250.com going and the highest to date is in the upper-25000's (and that's pretty much a U.S. representation more than anything) so if you guys were to start listing your VINs on the 450 you might glean an idea of the production numbers stateside based on the highest number.
