I can answer question number one with pretty good certainty, the answer is yes! ;) It's very easy to do.
The rest are questions for the real gurus! I've forgotten so much too.o_O

There is a shop here in Columbia Station that we've used on several occasions for very oddball jobs. I went to school with a member of the owners family so maybe that's why they've never turned me down.
They even bored the clutch cover for the Kickstarter that I plan on installing.
Sent you a PM with their info if you're interested.

Another engine would probably be less time consuming. A 2nd generation engine is easier to find & will fit, but the electrical wiring is slightly different. Personally I'd try to stick with a 1st gen if you do bite that bullet. More power!!!

At least you definitely kept your sense of humor about it. I laugh at myself more often as time goes on. Not because I haven't learned, but because of what I've forgotten.
I too feel for your woes.

Sounds to me like a rebuild isn't really going to be that probable.
I bought my "parts bike", that is now my everyday rider, for $200. Perhaps you can find something similar???? Hope, Hope, hope!

I got mine on craigslist. That might be a suggestion.. Also broaden your in your circle to a larger area & check the motorcycle parts section as well.

Before you give up completely. I saw this up by Kalamazoo, MI.
1985 Rebel for $1500.
But, maybe it is time to throw in the towel though. It was at least a learning experience. I hope to see you on the road sometime.
