Hey yall, its been a while. So due to these... interesting times (and recently getting laid off because to the virus) I decided to pull the engine on my 450 for a lick of paint. I plugged all the in/outlets and soda blasted off 40 years of grime(very satisfying) so now she's ready for paint. I'd like yall's recommendation for what kind of paint to use. Ive been looking at some of the Eastwood paint; it looks nice, and my dad just painted a MG engine with some of their brush/spray on stuff, but I'd prefer to get something spray on because of the cooling fins. I don't have a hvlp gun, so I'd prefer something in a can, but I'm seeing so many mixed reviews on cans. I would also like something that doesn't require heat to cure, I don't mind waiting a month or so; this is because the engine is out and I'm not sure when I will be able to start it again. I'm open to getting a harbor freight gun if all the stuff in cans is crap, but my compressor is only 1.6hp/4.5gal so I'm not sure it can handle a gun; and a can seems like the simplest solution. Happen to be in the same boat with painting engine. Mine was already painted, but the covers are crap. I am going with gloss black High Temp BBQ grill paint because I have used it before and it's what I have. Cleaned with lime away and scuffed with 100-150 grit. Don't have soda blaster :(

Interested to see what brands of spray cans others have had success with.

if youve got the patience, id polish the covers... thats what I intend to do with mine. I already did the stator cover and it came out sweet! but took forever to sand out the scratches (po used like 150 grit in attempt to get off the clear, luckily he gave up after doing a small portion). I think the black/chrome looks gonna be sweet! will post pics when its done. also pick up a soda blaster at harbor freight... only $30! the media was actually more expensive than the blaster itself! best $30 i think ive ever spent!

An automotive paint shop may be able to recommend a good quality rattlecan paint. Suggest you use a two part clear coat such as Spray Max 2k clear coat.

I think I'm going use that when I paint the tins, specifically because of its gas resistance; but I don't think that specific one is rated for high temps of an engine. Eastwood makes some nice 2k rattle can paint, but at $26.99 a can rather pricy; and I wanted matte not gloss. But if no bodys got experience with it maybe I'll do mine and show yall how it comes out. So if theres a cheaper option of equal quality, I'd like to know about it.

The heads come from the factory with a fuel resistant clear coat, but not sure what brand they use. This one is aluminum colored, so should be matte: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Rust-Oleum-High-Heat-Aluminum-Paint/17203458?selected=true
Ah I was wondering why it looked like the head was painted; I figured po (not too savy with bikes lol) had sprayed it with something because it was chipping in areas. I already soda blasted that off so it doesn't need anything else in terms of prep. I was looking to do matte black, and a lot of those super high temp paints require them to be heated over 500 degree (way hotter than engine would ever get) and if you don't they're super weak and flake off. I want this to be a one and done deal, and I want the best results I can achieve with a can. Ive heard some not so good things about the Rustolem tip, specifically it being inconsistent even when the can is warmed in water before use, but Duplicolor has ok reviews. I saw forum member Jax has a couple 450's, I really liked the way the red 450 with the matte black engine came out! Maybe I'll go with that Eastwood 2k stuff and show y'all how it comes out. I've never had issues with their stuff, and a lot of the time you get what you pay for.

Hey there, I just finished painting my engine using VHT high heat metallic black engine paint. I didn't use a clear coat (probably should have) I'll try it out for the summer and see how it holds up. If it doesn't then it sounds like a good project for next winter

that came out sweet! i really like how you sanded the fins, I plan to do that to mine too! I saw the vht paint and thought about using it myself! i want something with a 2 part hardener which is why that eastwood stuff has got my eye! let us know how it holds up! did yours need to be warmed to operating temp to cure the paint?

If that Eastwood paint is a 2k paint it'll most likely hold up better than mine lol. It will need to run through a couple heat cycles to cure the pain but I haven't been able to yet as the bike isn't finished and it's still a little cold out where I am. I'll keep you posted on how it holds up when I am able to ride it!
