Light brightens when revved & flickers dimmer & brighter at constant revs. New battery about a month ago, cleaned terminals & even used a jumper wire to see if the ground to the frame needed cleaning. I'm guessing regulator, but would like to know before ordering parts since I have to have things shipped or flown in to our "Rock". It's my '09 Rebel 250. Where do I kick it to clear this up ?

Mine was doing something similar with the LED light I installed. Turned out the connection between the light and harness was loose. It's normal for the light to brighten when the engine is revved and dim at lower rpms.

No LED lights and the only time I had a similar thing happen, the battery was about gone. Otherwise, the neutral light & headlight have kept even brightness. Doesn't the system run on the battery, with the alternator just charging the batt. ? If so, the brightness should remain constant, shouldn't it ? Anything that changes, catches my attention. Have new batt. & think it must be the "wreck-ti-fier". No problems with starting, driving etc.. Just want to correct whatever it is before it fries my batt. or something else.

The Rebel engine can run with a dead battery.

Battery gives strong starts. I'm just going to stick a new rectifier on it & see. Hope they have one on the French side. Ordering from off Island can be slow. Now, where is the bloody rectifier ? I can seem to find a diagram/pic of where it is. Under the tank ? I'm going to mount the seat & tank with Velcro yet !

In have never had what you are describing on a Rebel. The stator output drops at idle, but you are right, the lights run off the battery. First, check the charging system. Get a multimeter, set it on volts, and connect the leads to the battery terminals. With the engine off, it should read right around 12V. With the engine idling it should drop down into the 11V range, because the lights and ignition are drawing more power than the stator puts out. Then rev it up a bit, and you should see readings in the 14V range, and they should be steady. Voltage should not fluctuate. If it does, you have a bad RR (regulator/rectifier) a bad stator, or a loose connection somewhere. It could still be a bad ground to the lights even if the battery has a good chassis ground. You could take a piece of wire and ground the lights directly to the battery and see if it makes any difference. The Rebel has a fairly simple electrical system, so with some patience it shouldn't be that difficult to track it down with a multimeter.

Thanks everybody. I'll play around with it some more, but think a new r/r is probably in order. Gotten good advice on this forum & like learning about other people's experiences.

When all else fails, read the instructions.

pull the headlight bulb out of the bucket, plug it into the socket, and with the bike just switched on, wiggle them and make sure its not a bad bulb prong or wire in the bulb plug...

Kytron, the neutral light does the same merde. Ck'd batt. today & shows normal. Observing closer, I see that what I am observing is the lights go brighter & immediately go back to normal brightness. That indicates to me that the r/r is giving a high voltage momentarily to the battery. Still thinking r/r problem. Sailing up to St. Thomas next weekend & see they have a dealer on "Butt Rd.". Surely have an r/r. Want to get it working right before I fry my new battery ! Where the h*ll is the r/r located ? Is it under the tank ? All the sites I've looked at seem to avoid telling me. I'm an aircraft mechanic (A&P), so have the tools, but not a bike mechanic. Learned long ago to learn from other people's experience & mistakes.

Problem ? Always look at the last thing worked on 1st.

up and forward, in the fuel tank tunnel-ish area above the spark coils, it is the only electrical component with heat-sink-cooling-fins on it.

Found the bloody thing Kryton ! Ordered new one today. Have to go to St. Thomas & it should be here when I get back. The only mechanic on the Rock that I trust agrees about it being the r/r going out. Hope it doesn't burn things before I get the new one in. Bikes are the only way to get around on most islands & this is my only transportation until the Pulsar gets here. The only time the Island looks like the glossy pix in the magazines is in the saddle after a good brownie ! LOL

Thanks to all you guys for being a sounding board & giving good advice. A bientot, from "The Friendly Island".

Quick update. I found it Kryton ! Wreck-ti-fier seemed to cure problem, but not before if fried my fairly new battery. Happy rider again !! Back to life in Steerage Class. LOL
