How would you go about removing the Rebel decal? iv debadged my car before taking off the Subaru letters off the trunk with a hairdryer and dental floss wondering if it would be the same thing. Also it kinda looks like my Rebel decal might be under the clear coat its an 04 rebel. Can anyone confirm that? I dont wanna start picking away at it and realize its under the clear. If it is under the clear how would i get it off just pick away and then i guess spray paint the tank?

I'm pretty sure it's under the clear. I saw a video demonstrating how to remove one without taking the paint off. I'll post a link when I find it.

Found it!

Most bike decals are under the clear so that gas don't take them off. I would at least plan on re clearing it if I did that.

I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. I was just impressed with that method because it doesn't involve scraping or sanding the base paint off like many people have told me was the only way to deal with a decal under the clear. If you are going to cover the area with something else, it beats starting from bare metal.
So....how does he take it off? Some of us have dial up becouse high speed stopped two houses down the road. My internet service provider would hang up on me before I got that downloaded.

I have a genuine intrest, I'm thinking about repainting.

The gist of it is to lube the surface up with dish soap and water. Lift the edge of the decal, and saw behind it with mono-filament fishing line. Use a plastic scraper to take the decal off once the line has passed behind it. I haven't tried this myself, but I have purchased from this site. I do believe they are on the level.
I'm wondering if the demonstration decal was under the clear coat or not? BTW, WD-40 removes adhesive residue and won't harm the paint. Also good for removing road tar from vehicles.
I removed mine on my '08 last weekend. I used a single edge razor blade scraper. You can find them in the auto section of department stores or auto parts stores with the window tint removal products. The clear-coat is so thin you wouldn't beleive it. I used my finger nail to lift up the edge of the tribal flame at the rear most of the gas tank and then lifted the rest in nearly one complete piece with the scraper. I then used goof off to remove any residual adhesive. It leaves a raised edge/outline (or indentation depending upon how you look at it) of the decal which I shaved flush with the scraper. I'll probably spray a few coats of clear coat over it at some point. No paint loss at all. Good luck.
Thanks fridg, filed away for future reference.:)

If I ever catch up with my "to do" list, I plan on having stretch decals made for my tank with my own custom graphic. I'm going to get them big enough to cover the Rebel logo, printed on a black background.
I could see myself screwing that up royally LOL. I would hit it with the air craft stripper. Take it to the metal and spray it with epoxy primer and then pick a fancy color from House of Kolor or Alsa and spray it and clear it. They got some cool paints now that change with heat and Alsa has that Mirra chrome that is 97% of the shine of real chrome. A bike tank is not that hard to paint as a car. Good luck with the decal and let us know how that goes.
