It's pretty simple. The filter consists of the filter body with two nipples. Here's a typical filter: http://www.amazon.com/Visu-Filter-In-Line-Fuel-Filter-Standard/dp/B00388NNMS/ref=sr_1_14?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1296068296&sr=1-14 Many auto parts stores carry identical or similar filters.

Remove a section of fuel line as long as the filter body (not the entire filter). About midway between the carb and gas tank is usually good. Slide a clamp onto one end of the fuel hose, insert the filter nipple into the hose, slide the clamp over the hose covering the nipple and tighten till snug. Repeat for the other end and you're done. Note that on the filter linked to above, there is an arrow indicating the direction of fuel flow. Clear filters allow you to see any sedimant that has made it's way to the filter.
