crappy plastic choke nut

11315 Views 38 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  01-7700
Just bought a 1999 rebel 250 for my girlfriend and on the test ride the cheap little plastic nut that threads into the carb at the end of the choke cable shed its threads and left the bike struggling to run. It ran great before this happened so I bought it figuring that finding the part would be easy. NOT. Searched and searched the web, went to the local dealer and nothing. Problem is that in the parts diagram for the carb and the handlebar assembly the little nut is missing. I found the lookalike part but only in pics and they all say they are for kawasaki only. It has a keihin carb by the way. Anyone know of a part number for this tiny little piece? Thanks for you cumulative wealth of knowledge in getting my gal on the road!

Glad you were able to extract the old one and get a new one in there. You're certainly not the first, or last, to shear one off. The hex sides lead folks to think they need to be tighten with a wrench, when hand pressure is plenty. A knurled side would probably have been a better design.

How did you end up getting the broken plastic part out of the threads? I just made the same mistake and over tightened that plastic fitting with a wrench!
Welcome. Have you tried the flat tipped screwdriver mentioned earlier in this thread?

The metal components of the choke are currently in the hole where the plastic fitting broke off, so there’s no room to get a flathead driver in there. Should I just try to yank the choke out completely, then go in with the flathead?
Try using a small flat tip screwdriver to tap the nut out by hitting the nut so it turns counter clockwise. If that doesn't work, and the narrow neck that holds the choke plunger in the hole isn't in the way, you should be able to pull the plunger out and use the screwdriver to remove the nut. If the neck is still there, try cutting it off closer to the threads and see if you can pull the plunger out.
pics help!

don't yank it out - try to find a flat head that can fit inside the top of the bore of the nut tightly - the cable and plunger shouldn't be in the way if you find the right driver - or grind something down to fit 4mm or so if i remember correctly

I've read this entire thread, and was just curious why no one has mentioned, what happen's to the little plastic fragment's that are left in the choke hole, after the threads have been sheared off,
Do they just MAGICALLY disappear !!!
Maybe blow the hole out with compressed air, when installing the new one ?
I too have stripped that crappy little plastic nut, after i just cleaned and rebuilt it, Don't really want to have to pull that carb off again, but might have to, to shake it out

Any Thought's on this ???
@ree1man I didn't have any bits. Mine sheared into two distinct pieces. So I didn't worry about it.
Hi - I'm the one with the nuts :wink2:

eBay or send me a PM - :happy0034:
I know this is a much older thread, but only one I found with the same issue I am having. I just need the lil plastic screw in piece. Still avail from you?

Thanks!
The nuts are still available but you'll have to private message me through the forum - i.e. become a member.
