Chain tensioner thread snapped: is bike safe to ride?

Hey all,

2012 Honda 250 Rebel]

I was adjusting my chain tension, and when I was tightening the lock nut on the right side, it snapped the thread (see picture).

Two questions:

1. Is the bike safe to ride? I imagine the tensioner on the right side could migrate over time (or the adjuster nut fall off), however: with the axle bolt tightened, would the tension be locked in place enough to keep it safe to ride?

2. Are there any good websites to buy quality replacement tensioners?

thanks you everyone!

If the axle nut is tightened, the tensioner position would be locked in place.

See post #9 here for how to replace just the broken bolt: JB Weld on Chain Adjuster? | Honda Rebel 250 & 450 Forum (hondarebelforum.com)

Jacks Rebel Warehouse likely will have used ones, ebay may have new and used and partzilla.com or a Honda dealer will have new ones. CMX250 chain adjuster for sale | eBay

I didn’t think about replacing just the bolt, I’ll check that out!

also thanks for the replacement info. Is this a pretty common thing to happen? Perhaps I overtorqued the tensioner?

I’m pretty new to riding, and I’ve been diving into repairs this past year. This forum has been a godsend

thank you all so much :) appreciate ya
Yes, snapping the bolt happens fairly often, especially for folks with no previous experience in dealing with tensioners and jam nuts. It takes very little pressure to hold a jam nut.

Might have to place these dots in a way they line up again.

That is a good point. The rear drum brake might need to be tweaked, is that what you mean? My plan was to get the bike up, undo the axle and slide it out enough to slip out the old tensioner and put the new one in. You think that will offset the drum brake line?

it happens a lot - adjust chain tension with a loose axle nut - then recheck after tightening the nut
