IMO, I just went through the "fix vs replace" dilemma, and found swapping a working engine to be far easier and less frustrating than the week or two I spent trying (and failing) to fix my broken engine.

Well !!! I took the clutch side case back off and the starter, and viola , not seized up anymore! The dang starter had it locked up I think. But then I noticed that the gear that it turns,spins freely. So does the gear it turns. That's all I can see from clutch side. I had starter problems a few years ago and have push started it ever since. with the two gears spinning freely, what would be my issue with that?
~ on the road again ( hopefully!) I have to get a valve cover gasket before I ride it. If and when I do get it going, I'll post a video of it running.

Or so I thought. It keeps locking up. Any motors out there? Probably not. Anyways I got lots of used parts for 86 450

If you can't find a motor, a parts bike would be another option. Not sure if it's still available, but member ChicagoMatrix had a 450 listed for sale in the classified section not too long ago.
