Driver's Backrest...

Guys and gals,

Before I mention the backrest idea I have, I want to say that I'm a mechanical design engineer. I have about 17 years working directly as a design engineer for automotive OEMs. I am no expert or rocket scientist. I'm always learning. I have a regular design engineering job currently, but like to do projects of my own.

One of the things I like about the Rebel (versus the Burgman I own and am going to sell), is it seems much easier to customize and / or generate projects on than the Burgman. That said, my only issue with the Rebel so far is comfort. I stated in another thread that I'm built like Shrek (no joke) and smell twice as bad.

As I was riding I thought, how nice it would be to kick my legs out, and have something to lean back against. I'd be in heaven. Forward controls exist, and are forthcoming. But I haven't much liked the options I've seen for a driver's backrest. But I got to thinking (stand back!), the bike has so little power (and I even kind of like that), that I don't believe I'll ever double anyone. I did double my son on it once and he said it was terrible. Seat was too small, and felt like he was slipping rearward off of it the whole time. So, I may never double again.

I was thinking, what if the rear seat could toggle up like the trunk lid of a car? Except it would have to be fixed (up). So, I started working on a concept. I now have completed a design concept.

But before I start developing, I wanted to see if any in here had any interest in such an item. Right now my concept is, sort of a couple truss-type brackets. Remove the rear seat (easy), add this, add that, only needing 1 tool, and voila, the rear seat is now a driver's backrest! No holes to drill. No scratched paint. No welding. No Tom Foolery. Want to double? Comes right back off and the seat attaches back same as it did originally.

I'm probably going to make one for my own bike regardless, but wanted to see if there is any interest.

If so, I'll make a prototype (may be a while) and post up pictures.

P.S. Exhaust pipes in process to work on adding an AFR gauge to the bike, as mentioned in another post.

You might want to put firmer foam in the seat/backrest. That's what I did on my rear rack. See the first picture here: https://www.hondarebelforum.com/memb...lbums1134.html

That's cool and all. I'll consider that once I get a prototype to lean back against. 2 things. 1. Changing the foam would be much more involved and complex, than adding what I've got designed / in mind. And 2. Generally seat foam is much stiffer that backrest foam anyway. So I suspect the stock rear seat foam would be stiff enough. But I won't know for sure until my back is resting against it for oh, maybe 30 minutes. I just happen to have been a seat design engineer for 1 major OEM. That was the only area of the vehicle I worked on for them. That experience is not helping me in this case (not sure it ever will). My *idea* is metal structure design.

As one of my bikes has no pillion seat I had plans in place to make a back rest. I went so far as to go to an auto junk yard and buy the head rest from the drivers seat on some kind of Ford. Once I started traveling across country, I realized that all the gear I was packing made a good back rest, so I never got any farther with the project.

Someone is making ghb a detachable driver's backrest for I think around 50 bucks. Saw one on ebay. It slides into a bracket between the seats

From this:
I think it is cool. I was actually looking for one.

I assume you're all familiar with the Protac driver backrest, right? See here for more info:

As I said elsewhere, I have a Protac (along with a Corbin seat), and I can drive all day without getting uncomfortable!
