flitecontrol It's not necessary to drill all the way through the cap. All that is needed is to allow air into the tank, and that can be done without drilling all the way through.

It wouldn't destroy the cap, IF it is drilled in the right place. But if you drill into the lock mechanism, which could be easy to do if you don't know exactly where things are, could easily destroy the cap. I think the hole should go all the way through the cap. to the outside. That would mean drilling it closer to the edge of the cap to avoid the lock and latch mechanisms. A new gas cap costs $55.

flitecontrol Thanks for posting and letting others know the tank is actually vented. If you weren't aware, those Chinese tanks are prone to developing leaks at the seams. Caswell Epoxy Tank Coating will not only keep it from leaking, but prevent any rust from forming due to condensation. It's the only tank liner I recommend.

craftyrafter Found this thread before purchasing an aftermarket tank. Well, I just got my tank, fully prepared to drill a hole in the gas cap. But lo and behold! It is actually vented. I bought the all black one that usually runs around $80:

While the description says "not vented", the tank has a metal hose on the underside, and I verified that it is actually a functional vent: I taped the gas cap opening, put a nitrile glove over the little hose, and put an air compressor on the petcock. The glove inflated. You can see the stock image of this tank has the little tube in the first picture. What these don't show is that the tube does go all the way inside the tank.

I don't know about the two tone $60 tanks, but the all black ones seem to be the same, so I'd assume all of them are in fact vented.

Overall quality: it's ok. The outside of the tank is nicely painted. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and the stock one, paint-wise. The decals seem to be on the outside of the clear coat, which could be nice for people who want different ones. It's wider than the stock one, which I like. It has a "warning, gas is flammable" sticker right in the middle, below the gas cap opening. That's annoying, and I might try to remove that. Came with no gas cap or any hardware at all. On the underside it's uneven primer. On the inside, the tank vent tube actually has a little spot where something like paint is flaking off it. I'll probably give it a good rinse with water and see what comes out. My bike is currently at the mechanic, so I can't swap this thing in to show what it looks like, but overall it looks like it'll fit just fine.

Reb, wish you had waited for my reply to your question in the other thread. The lock tumbler is in the center of the cap, right under the "P". If you drill too far there, you can ruin the lock mechanism. Which is why you should always drill the hole off center.

JerryH Rather than destroy the stock cap, I would just get a vented cap. It would be Chinese, so how much could it cost. Apparently many of these Chinese tanks appear to have a place to put a vent hose, but it was sealed at the factory because the tank was made to use a vented cap.

Reb I drilled the hole at the location (near the center aka "P"), but I see in the new hole, what looks like a part of a spring (that moves the 2 cap side lock latches), so maybe it is not venting outside? I stopped drilling when I felt it went thru, and the side lock latches still spring out when I press the gasket ring, and hold in when the key is turned.

mojorisn It should be somewhere on the bottom that fits inside the tank. A small hole in the center would be fine, close to where the P is in the photo. Don't drill too deep though, just enough to break through the surface.

chiefmbull I'm assuming the hole should be in the center of the cap? Underneath the key hole?

mojorisn If you have a gas cap from a 96-up Rebel you're wanting to use on an non-vented gas tank you need to drill a small hole in the bottom of the cap to vent it.
