Ok, bought myself an electric impact tool. Sure made easy work of getting the rotor off. All stripped down in minutes, no need for straps and ways to hold the crank in place.
The seal is seated well, no sign of it having popped out. Perhaps the seal has cracked inside due to age?
As for the starter clutch, I checked the rollers and they spring back and forth as I believe they should. I lubed them up inside, but I never took the cover off as those screws look a **** to get off. The whole setup looks fine, but on re-assembling the starter clutch still makes the stupid "awooga" sound when it disengages.
Any ideas what may be worn on the starter clutch to cause this?

What is usually the culprit for a starter clutch that makes a howling sound, like "awooga" when it disengages?
Going to ask a friend in a machine shop to thread me an m16 bolt so I can pop off the flywheel and get these last two jobs done.

'85 Rebel, all oil and grease would be in sad condition, especially if it sat outside in weather for a while.
To hold the flywheel I clean all the oil off and use a rubberized strap wrench.

The starter makes the "howling" noise when it disengages. So the clutch might be a bit dried out?
It probably got overfilled for sure by the previous owners.
I took rotor cover off, there was a little bit of oil in there and of course it was pretty dirty. The flywheel bolt has a 14mm a/f head, this is really tight so for now I have left it alone until I can order a new seal. When I do get it off, any tips for the starter clutch?
Finally what is the favoured method for holding the rotor/flywheel in place?

The crank seal pops out when the oil level reads above the high mark on the dip stick. So if you ever overfill, be sure to drain the excess or it will pop out again. Most likely, the seal isn't sealing because it's old.
The starter sounds like it needs some lube, there are no bearings, just bushings.

|flitecontrol||The seal may be reuseable, but if it isn't, it may take some riding to find out. If it leaks, you have all that work to do again. If it were me, I'd just get a new seal and be done with it. I hate having to redo things.|

Crank seal and starter clutch
Just trying to get a few more jobs finished on my wifes 85 250.
There appears to be a leak underneath the engine, I think I've pinpointed it to the rotor/flywheel cover. I'm guessing this is the crank seal that has probably popped out due to the pressure. I've attached a pic of where the leak is. It occasionally drips onto the exhaust pipe, sometimes no drips at all.
I know there'd be some issues, it's a bike that was not so taken care of and not serviced or rode in a long time.
Other than removing the rotor cover, removing the flywheel/rotor, the rubber seal if in good shape can be popped back in?
Do I need any special tools, I was going to buy a 16mm 1.5 pitch bolt to help pop the rotor off the end of the crankshaft. Any special type of just a longish bolt, put in, tight it up, crack a hammer, tighten up again, crack hammer and hopefully the rotor comes off.
While I'm in there I was going to check the starter clutch. It's making the embarassing strangled goose sound after pressing the starter. Does the whole starter clutch need replacing or is there a kit of the usual failed parts for the clutch.
Just figured while I have the rotor off I should do everything in there.
