Good luck to you as you decide how to go. If you are gonna go with the highway gears I can recommend looking up JT Drive Chains & sprockets he has a superior quality of steel and I have not had to change mine since the initial purchase and like I said earlier I have around 12K miles on the set up with more than half of my adjustment left!

My engine stays so hot as I ride I change oil every 500 miles. No joke. And even though I have switched my oil to 20w50 it still comes out of there thin as water and has a well baked black color every 500 miles. I have put aprx 12K miles on her with this gear ratio and I plan to take my engine down this winter and regasket every gasket as she is looking HEAT STRESSED at every single gasket-ed junction. It really requires constant awareness and vigilance to not over heat and damage the engine.

Thats the cons. Pros are I am the only 250 rebel that keeps up with the big Harley's in the annual trail of tears ride. I can and do hit everything the speedometer can show every time out of the barn. I changed my ratio from a 33 tooth rear sprocket to a 30 tooth. Front sprocket is still standard. I am very glad I did not change it too at the same time (I would have killed my engine dead due to over heating it before I had realized the danger I am sure).

I can't recommend changing the gear ratios after having done so and run it going on three years. Here is why. These bikes are air cooled. My best torque is made well below the rpm range that is required for her to stay above 68 MPH. So when I push her to stay up with highway traffic. She gets really hot (I have measured 265 degrees many times (I was told by a trusted biker here that conventional oil breaks down very quickly at 280)). Although my bike will with a bit of difficulty here (lots of hills) stay up with faster moving traffic at least most of the time (terrain). But she makes so much heat I have had to learn to let her breathe a couple of minutes out of every 5 to 10 minutes of hard running This keeps her running around 240 degrees.
