Faint gas smell...

Hey all,
Noticed recently in my garage a gas smell coming from my 86 rebel... got down underneath it today and noticed a smell coming from the tubes in the pictures... recently started turning off the petcock which I hope helps the smell. No fluids on or under the bike..

Thank you

Do you happen to have a California model? They have a carbon cannister that can become saturated. Try turning the petcock off about 1/2 mile before you park the bike and see if that helps. Also, check the oil level to see if gas may have gotten into the crankcase.

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

As far as I know it’s been New York State registered for 20+ years.. could be a dirty carb?

The float valve stuck, or is worn out, allowing gas into the crankcase. You can try tapping on the carb bowl with a screwdriver handle to unstick it. Turning the petcock to off every time the bike is parked is a good habit to develop. It prevents what just happened. You could also remove the carb and replace the valve. As old as the bike is, more than likely the rubber tip on the valve is hard and the bowl gasket won't reseal, so plan on replacing that too. Don't disassemble the entire carb, just remove the bowl so you can access the float valve.
