rpm drop

hey so ive got a weird one. i finally fixed the issue with my sticky throttle, the bolts needed to be on top and bottom of both the brackets for it to remain snappy in all handlebar positions. so i took it out for a little ride the other day up and down my road a few times, no more than 2 or 3 miles. it ran pretty good i didnt take it past 45-50 and went to 4th and it seemed to run fine. shifted good, no backfires, i thought i finally sorted the engine. so i go to start it today to make sure everything is consistent. i attach my tach (happy i did) fire her up (with choke on), she fires right up. starts at 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600 1700, and then it just drops to 750. the climbing was over a span of about 15 seconds and it just instantly dropped. now it doesnt start. not sure what could be causing this. first i checked the plugs, they looked fine. they were at like .36-.37 so i put them both to .33 (manual says .31-.35). I checked the bowls, they both have plenty of fuel. my only possible theory is that some crap from the fuel tank made its way to the carbs and is blocking something. but before i go tearing that crap apart again i figured id post.

sounds like you're on the right track - fuel blockage inside carb

concur with 01-7700
Happened to me after about a month of riding my new-to-me used rebel. The jets got clogged with debris from the tank, I could only get a pathetic half hearted popping idle with the throttle cranked wide open. A full detailed meticulous anal-retentive cleaning and replacing all the rubber bits got it fine and dandy.

yep a fuel filter and carb recleaning fixed it. theres an awful lot of ticking coming from the top end... i know the 250's are known to sound like a sewing machine... is this normal for the 450's aswell? oil level was ok... my friend thought valves could need adjustment

It should be a subtle undertone of sewing-machine, if its a dominant sound ticking sound your valve clearance/lash is too big and needs adjusting.
