CDI Unit Compatibility

Hello guys. Bought a cheapo CDI unit for the Honda Rebel CMX250. Can't find them for the 125cc anywhere. So my question is, do the CMX250 CDI units work on the CA125s?

I won't be of much help regarding your CA125
I can tell you, 1st gen 85-87 CMX250 CDI will not work on 2nd gen 96-2016 CMX250 or vice versa..

From experience "GY6" CDI boxes Do Not provide electronic advance as rpm increases, but will work on 1st generation Rebel in what I would call limp mode.. Without spark advance engine damage likely to occur over time..

Looked at a CA125 wire diagram, it appears a 2nd gen cmx250 cdi may work.. The wiring and safety interlocks are the same..

96 VS800 Intruder (sold 2018 ), 87 CMX250C Rebel,
79 CB400 Hawk (sold 93), 75 CB350 (sold 83), 71 CB350 (stolen 74)

I've put a CA125 engine (Of unknown year) into a 1985 CMX250 frame with the original 1985 CMX250 wiring. I'm assuming the engines themselves are the same, it was just a difference in the wiring system. I did buy a 250cc CDI unit which claims to work on Regal Raptor DD250E and CMX250 (I also have a DD250E which is why I bought it). I may test it out on the 125 since nobody has any real definite answer on this topic.

And for the love of god, what's with all the advertisements on this website? I couldn't even scroll to the bottom of the page to Quick Reply due to all the ads.

one of the problems is Honda used AC (alternating current) CDI on the Rebel and smaller CC engines.. Larger bikes use DC (direct current) CDI that obtain power from battery..
AC CDIs are common on outboard boat engines as well as pull start engines that have no battery.

can't speak to the ad problem as I use NoScript to block that crap

You can thank the forum owners for that.

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Missed that bit of info

a 2nd generation cdi will not work with 1st gen wiring without changing a bit of wiring..

my experience is documented in this thread

1st gen Rebels had no kickstand interlock, lower center cdi pin was spark output to coil..
2nd gen cdi lower center pin is safety interlock (kick stand) ground

What year is the 125 engine? The GY6 is a Chinese scooter engine (though I believe it may have originally may have been designed by Honda) and I've only seen them in 150cc displacement. There must be a CDI out there for a 125 somewhere. Another benefit to points and condenser ignition is centrifugal advance.

I just did a search, and found this site:

https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/...7-wire-harness

It appears that part #30410keb901 (part #3 in the diagram) is the CDI unit, and is no longer available from the manufacturer. There must be some out there somewhere though. It seems the CA125 is far more common worldwide than the CMX250 due to restrictions for engine size for beginners in many countries.
