Dusting off an old thread
I found an 86 Rebel for $300 bucks. The electronics were shot completely (Every light, horn, charging system, battery you name it).
BUT, if you push start it, the engine runs like a champ. So I picked it up to give my girlfriend as a trainer / starter bike.

I've repaired all of the electrical issues and am left with just an issue with the starter. When I hit the starter button the engine occasionally sounds like it wants to self destruct. Some times the starter just spins and engine doesn't... so I know the starter clutch is on its way out.
Question is when these things fail is it usually just the rollers and springs?
I can order a set of springs from Ron Ayers for around $10, or I can order the whole clutch assembly off of Ebay for $50 New One Way Bearing Starter Clutch for Honda Rebel 250 CMX250 CMX 250 82 09 | eBay

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Haven't had to repair mine, but judging from this kit, I'd say all you need is the rollers and springs. Honda CB160 CB175 CB200 CMX250 CB350F Starter Clutch Repair Kit 91101 253 020A | eBay

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Garage
I'd try the rollers and springs first. The rollers can flat spot a little causing them not to seat properly.

Hello. I have a 94 rebel 250 and my starter clutch has also gone. I live in Australia and would like to buy a kit and do it myself. Where is the best place to buy one? And also a detailed description on how to replace would be very handy thank u in advance

Ronayers.com is usually a good place to look at the parts diagrams for the bike... pricing is decent there as well. (My local Honda shop did a price match, which was nice).

Still haven't rebuilt mine yet as it decided it wants to work 95% of the time, as long as the bike is started in Neutral....

So letting the GF learn to ride it, and I'll tear it down on a rainy weekend.
