I haven't used it since I sold my Bonneville, but I will be back at it soon. Or jack the bike up on my lift. I FINALLY have a 'garage' just for my bikes. I been saving pennies for a long time and it was worth it. My $0.02, I have oiled chains for a long time using good 'ole GL-5 80W-90, as recommended by some chain manufacturers. Not soaked and dripping in the stuff, but a light coat of it. The actual roller lube is sealed in by the X or O seals anyway, and stuff put on the outside is to protect the seals and metal parts. If I got that right. Whatever you use, use it properly and at the correct interval, which can change depending on how and where you ride.

How many miles do you get from a chain with 80W-90?

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

The original chain on the Bonneville I had was a DID 525 and I beat the snot outta that thing. Hard abusive shifting to red line a lot. It was an awesome fun bike. It got 22K miles on it before i changed it in 18 months, and i could have went further but i was gonna have a weekend of nothing but vehicle maintenance so i put on an EK i scored off eBay for dirt cheap. Guy ordered the wrong one so he let it go fast. I rode that bike all over and up and down the outer banks here in NC. Keep an eye on it and don't let the nasties build up and any decent chain should last a good long time. I sold that bike at 35K miles and still had the EK on it with plenty of life left. I always have GL-5 in the shed since my manual trans cars and my VTX uses it. It might not be for everyone but it works for me. At least on that Triumph. Been too many years since my KZ and CB bikes that I don't remember exactly how long those chains lasted. It was the 80s. Lots of things I don't remember, if you know what I mean haha.

Sounds like chain life was similar to other chain lubricating methods. And probably much cheaper too.

It won't hurt to try it if you already have some laying around. Put some on a rag and hold it on the chain while you spin the rear wheel around. Remember: if you put too much on it will sling all over the chain guard and rear wheel. A light coat will suffice.

I place a piece of 2x4 under the sidestand, jack up the right side of the swingarm so the wheel will spin, and use a rag soaked n WD-40 to clean the chain ( I buy WD-40 by the gallon, and use about a gallon a month) I use Bel Ray "Superclean" chain lube. It goes on white, is not sticky, and does not fly off. It does not attract dirt. PJ1 Blue Lable and Black Label are the worst chain lubes I have ever used by far. Not only are they super sticky, but they do fly off, and are almost impossible to get off the bike, your hands, and your clothes. I can't believe they still sell this stuff. A guy on an XT225 forum claims he got over 20,000 miles out of an O ring chain using nothing but WD-40 to lube it with. Remember, O ring chains are sealed, and the lubricant is sealed inside by the factory. They only reason they need lubricant at all is to help prevent external wear due to friction between the rollers and the sprocket teeth.
