Why did Honda not use a shaft with a cotter pin?

Anyone know/guess what the advantage of using a lock-by-folding-over-tab on this nut? Why not a castle nut on the shaft with a hole for a cotter pin, or similar? Not enough room?

Once a castle nut is properly torqued the slot may or may not align..

by staking you know the nut won't back off from properly torqued position..
