The 2005 Rebel 250 I bought recently was leaking fuel from the carb (float bowl) and the bike was idling a bit funny, so I took the carb off a while ago and finally got the parts yesterday. I cleaned everything and replaced the float bowl gasket as well as the float valve (just for good measure –*the old one might have been okay, but looked like it could be replaced...note: I bought a second market valve and compared it to the old one to be sure. Looks to be the exact size). I also replaced the air filter because it was dirty.
The good news is that the carb is no longer leaking! However, the idling issue has persisted and has perhaps worsened. I took a video so I could post it and see if anybody has any pointers:
Instead of being a smooth idle, it sounds a bit uneven. Also, it sounds like air is trying to be sucked somewhere, but I checked an old video I took before replacing and it sounded that way too, so maybe that is normal?
Anyway, a few thoughts I have:
- There is a slight amount of play in the throttle. Perhaps I should tighten it a bit so as to rev the engine just a hair?
- Alternatively, should I change the idle speed? (Perhaps the uneven idle is caused by the RPM being too low and that is normal?)
- Does it sound like the fuel/air balance needs to be adjusted? Perhaps it is taking in more air now with the new air filter, and it needs to be accounted for?
- Lastly, I suppose there is a chance that there is something weird about the float valve since it is not original?

Is the video taken after the engine warms up? If not, is the choke being used? If not, it isn't unusual for it to idle like that.
Oh, good point. Forgot to mention that the choke is NOT on in this video. The bike starts without needing to use the choke. Also, the bike wasn't totally warmed up, but it also wasn't cold, either. I took it for a spin around the block and let it idle for a minute or two. Sounds like this is pretty typical, then, which is good to know! Eventually, I probably should get some work done on other parts of the bike as well. (Or try to do it myself...working on the carb seems a lot easier than other parts, but I guess we'll see).
Check your compression. Adjust valves. Check plug gaps, and maybe replace plugs.
Did you carefully clean the pilot system in the carb--that pretty much controls fuel at idle.
Float height should make no difference at idle unless it is allowing fuel to overflow,
Use a propane torch and blow some propane around the engine side of the carb--if the engine speeds up then you have an air leak.
