Flashing oil light

Ok,


So, over the weekend I put some new plugs in my 450cmx. I also changed the oil and put in some 15/40 Valvoline, this is the first oil change since I got the bike a few months ago. I never changed the oil filter which I am regretting but I will try and order one. I assume these old 450s have an oil filter?


I also added some shims to the carb needles to enduce some richness because I have open pipes.


I took it for a quick run to the gas station yesterday, all seemed well. This morning I did my 6 mile trip to work. Again all fine.


But when I left work this evening the oil light remains solid when at idle, and is slow flashing when I am driving.


Are these bikes sensitive to the oil level as perhaps I need to top it up, or perhaps it is overfilled? Could these be a cause? Or the engine is not happy with the grade of oil?



It seems to coincidental that this started just after making these changes.

Did you use motorcycle oil or automobile oil?

Yes, they have a oil filter. Always, change your filter with fresh oil, always.

I use and highly recommend 20/50 grade Semi-synthetic motorcycle oil. Spectro is the brand of choice. I change every 1500-2k and with multiple, That is turning out to be ~3 years.

Do not use oil for automobiles.

Use motorcycle specific oil.

I also put in magnetic oil drain plugs. They collect stuff every change! Good investment toward engine 'health'!

You should download/buy and consult a manual too for specifics regarding (this and all other!) procedure(s) including oil filter replacement.

Careful with that drain plug torque of course!

Hi,


I used 15/40 Valvoline mineral oil which is for cars. Figured as most guys on here get away with using Castrol and other motor oils it might work for me. I checked and oil does not contain modifiers to hurt the clutch but I guess either the engine is not happy with the brand/grade or the filter needs a change.


I think I ordered a filter for my 450 a few months ago. Does this look like the correct one?

Ok, last night I drained all the oil while hot. Left it draining for a good 30 minutes and then replaced the oil filter too.


I added 2.2 liters of good quality 10/40 motorcycle oil. Today I took the bike to work, so that 6 miles there and the same returning home. Again the oil pressure light remains on at idle and flickers on an off during driving, usually the high the revs tends to put the light out.


I'm puzzled, this all started after I changed the oil and shimmed the carb needles as I put the open pipes back on.


Possibility that a lack of back pressure from open pipes causing this? Seems too coincidental this started after Sunday.

Only way to tell for sure is hook up an oil pressure gauge..

Wouldn't be the first time an electrical sending unit has gone bad..

Ok, will hook up a pressure gauge this week. Hard to find the sensors here in Netherlands, so I guess it will have to be a dealer probably.


I have put on the old pipes, so we will see if that makes a difference. Can't imagine that was the reason this has happened, we will see.


The engine sounds just the same as always, no knocking, no noises from the top end apart from the usual sewing machine rebel noise.

there appear to be aftermarket replacements
seems that part was used on many models over several decades

EU uses different part numbering system than here in US..
viewing site 1 and 2 from Ireland and ?? has educated me..

SWITCH ASSY., OIL PRESSURE (DENSO)"

Nippon Denso or equivalent sending unit shouldn't be too hard to find..

forum member Old School indicated a 7+ pound pressure switch could be used..
cross referencing you may find another brand which fits the bill as long as pressure and pipe fitting are correct..
many possibilities on this side of pond though one may have to change electrical connection..

there is an internal Relief Valve Assembly Ref # 3 part # 15220413020 that could be the cause of low pressure if indicated during testing..
