I see people suggesting the MSF course on this forum a lot. Does anyone have any thoughts on other motorcycle safety courses? I am specifically interested in the Motorcycle Ohio Basic Rider Skills course since I am signed up to take it next weekend, but also in general. Are most state sponsored or accredited motorcycle safety courses pretty good? Do people feel that it would be worth the 150 mile drive to take an in-state MSF course or the $225 tuition for an out-of-state MSF course even after taking the BMV sponsored one?

I took the motorcycle ohio class 2 years ago just as a look into what I was doing wrong, so my boss didnt have to go alone, and because i got to ride a blue 09 rebel for 2 days. I already had my license but felt like the class taught me a lot. Especially on riding in the rain and turning from a stop. I feel even though i had thousands of miles under my belt, the class was well worth the price and every time i ride i think back to the class and realize I'm using techniques i learned in it every time i ride.

Well it is good to know that the Motorcycle Ohio class is well worth it. I had a feeling that maybe the MSF course was just coming up so much because it was nationwide. If the MORE BRS is a good class I feel much more comfortable with taking just it as far as rider safety classes go.

BRS - Basic Rider Skills level class to get your license
MSF - Motorcycle Safety Foundation - organization that sets the national standards for rider training
DMV - department of motor vehicles provides the written test and the authority for the class instructor to sign your form granting you license to operate a 2 wheel vehicle.

don't let the alphabet soup throw you, any class that your state's motor vehicle department certifies as able to grant you your license from their test and training has to meet the standards,

The alphabet soup wasn't throwing me, the acronyms were my own actually :)

Apparently Ohio is a little different. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles isn't "certifying as able to grant your license from their test" with Motorcycle Ohio. Motorcycle Ohio is an actual branch of the BMV. I just didn't know how good the Motorcycle Ohio one was and if it would be worth the expense and/or hassle to take a MSF sponsored one too. From what Shakeedogg said it appears that the Motorcycle Ohio Rider Enhancement: Basic Rider Skills is a good class and that no other class would be necessary unless I wanted to take MORE: BRS-2 or MORE: ARS. Thank you for trying to help me understand though.

Having started riding before there were such courses in my area (1960), I can definitely advocate for training that does NOT come from the "try it a see" self-teaching method. That got a bit painful ;-)
