You are correct, VAReb. The Rebel measures front tire rotation to determine speed.

Many motorcycles with newer designs feed the speedometer info from the transmission. IIRC a device called a Speed Healer is sold to fix this problem when different sprocket sizes are used.

I had a CB500X which had the speedometer go from "right on" to 5% below the true speed because of changing the rear sprocket from 41 teeth to 39 teeth.
