Hey guys, so I own a 1999 Honda Rebel 250. For my knowledge can anyone tell me how often I should change the oil (and what kind of oil). How often should I can the air filter? And anything I should keep a look out for regular maintenance. Wanna make sure I'm doing this right.
Mot here use conventional oil and change it every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. Many automotive oils such as XW-30 contain friction modifiers which will ruin the bike's clutch. 10W-40 and above don't contain the friction modifiers and are safe to use. Your bike came with a paper filter, which isn't cleanable. How often it should be changed depends a lot on how dusty it is where you ride. Emgo makes a decent aftermarket air filter for much less than what a Honda stealershio will chqarge for an OEM filter. Valve clearance should be checked and adjusted as needed every 4,000 miles. Alll this information and more is in a service manual, which is a valuable tool to have. I recommend the Honda manual followed by Haynes. I do not recommend the Clymer manual as it wasn't updated for some of the changes between generations.
Thank you. Now I was reading where you have to oil the air filter or something? Im not sure if that was including my bike. Also, what valve are you speaking of that needs to be adjusted?
Add to all the above... change the oil every 1,000 miles! Check the tires, brakes, and lights every time BEFORE you ride. Drain the puke tube at least every 1,000 miles, maybe every time you take a real, long ride.
