1985-87 Air Filter Q

I popped this question in another thread but figured it might get more exposure as it's own topic versus a sidebar in another topic.

For the 80's CMX-250 the air filter is a canister with a foam sleeve that requires periodic oil treatments. What kind of oil is required and how often must it be applied?

Furthermore, what is the typical lifespan of that foam sleeve before it should be replaced?

Thanks in advance.

I've used motor oil, after reading literature on foam AF oils eh it's probably a good idea to use them..
maybe next time I will
Still have original foam on my 87 seems to work fine

Good to know it's a long term item.

So is it better to soak it in oil or spray it on? I looked up the AF oil and saw both forms available. How long does a coating last before you need to clean/reapply? And what do you clean it with?

I'm negligent and clean mine in kerosene (Aladdin lamp collector always have a 5 gallon bucket around) once or twice a year as you may notice from the filthy air box..
I've always soaked, more like drizzled oil over filter massaging to distribute evenly, the spray is attractive to me as it seems less messy
