New Rider with a 2009 250

Hello all.

I bought an '09 with super low milage on it a few months ago and found this forum as i was searching for how to perform an oil change. The community seems super helpful and nice. I hope to learn a lot and hopefully someday be able to contribute.

Congrats on the Rebel acquisition, and Welcome to the forum!

How many miles on your ‘09 Rebel?

When I bought it it had 1200. Maybe "super low" might have been an exaggeration, but I have put 1300 on it in the last 2 months. To me 1200 in 10 years seemed super low. The lady I bought it off of had records of it having a pre-season service each year since '09 though, so at least it was getting serviced even if it wasn't getting ridden.

That’s darn low miles for an ‘09 - - average of only 120 miles/year! Sounds like you scored.

I bough my ‘16 a month ago with roughly 450 miles on it. You’re way ahead of me, but I have added 200 to that already. Hard to imagine averaging only 120/year!

Did you take some road trips, or just wracking up the miles commuting?

I live in an area with lots of paved, windy, 2 lane state highways. I'm actually only about an hour and a half from Lake Hope. It would be nice to come meet some other Rebel owners, but I have plans for tomorrow and am riding on a permit so I can't stop down this evening and leave late. I was going for 30-50 mile rides on every clear day for the first month. After that I cut down to about twice a week on those rides and have been taking 100 mile rides on the weekend if we get a clear day. I do put some commuting miles on it, but that is maybe 4 miles total on the days I ride it to work. I can't even completely open the choke by the time I get to work without the engine stalling.

Wow, sounds like you live in a fantastic location for motorcycle riding.

I live in an urban area and a 20-mile ride takes well over an hour of time, often closer to 90 minutes, and is generally pretty stressful with all the traffic. Appreciate what you've got there!

Yeah, I definitely appreciate the roads around here. There are some I haven't gotten around to riding because I am a creature of habit, but I did get to go out two new ones today. I have attached the route I took recreated in google maps with the boring getting to and from the loop bit removed. It says it is right at 90 minutes and I'd say that was accurate. Really puts in perspective you saying that a 20 mile ride takes you that long. Did you make it to Lake Hope this year? Because if you did you may be riding some of the same roads depending on what route Guba takes and they are nice.

That looks like a fun loop, with quite a few nice curves!

No, I did not go to Lake Hope. I’m new to riding and that sort of trip is beyond my experience level. Plus, my vacation time is typically fully booked with family....
