The dreaded exhaust rattle.. need help!

Hey there awesome Rebel riders,

I need to buy a new right side exhaust due to the fact that the original one rattles like CRAZY!

I have a 1986 CMX250 and I'm wondering what year range I can use on my bike.
I know that they changed the flange design at some point, I just don't know when.

Also...is there anywhere that I can buy a NEW set of OEM mufflers? I've been searching all around, but have had no luck, even with my local dealer.

I hear that the after market ones, that look original, change color much more than the originals do, due to fewer inner layers. Is that true?

Welcome to the forum.

Exhaust rattles are usually baffles that have popped a weld and come loose. They can often be fixed by using a mechanic's stethoscope to locate where the noisy baffle is and then drilling a hole and inserting a sheet metal screw on the bottom of the muffler to keep the baffle from rattling. Occasionally, the inner pipe (OEM is double walled) will come loose where the muffler attaches to the head. That can be easily repaired by a welder.

Exhausts from any 250 Rebel will work. If you want new, check ebay and online suppliers like these: https://www.cyclepartsnation.com/ https://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemp...be032f/muffler be aware that many of the cheap ones on ebay are single wall Chinese knock offs that have poor quality chrome and discolor easily.

Jack will probably have a good OEM used one Jack's Rebel Warehouse - Rebel Catalog, Honda Rebel parts and accessories, as will ebay.

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Thanks for the reply here!

I did give it a listen with the mechanic stethoscope and it does sound like it's up at the head on both of my pipes now.

Would a screw work in that location? Or would it create too much back pressure right outside of the valve?

Cheap and easy is always good for me.

don't know what you mean by a screw but it probably wouldn't work - have you taken the exhaust off to inspect? maybe you need some new crush gaskets

It would be highly coincidental for both pipes to separate. I would first pull the pipes and see if you can hear a metal on metal sound when tapping the suspect area with a rubber mallet. A short sheet metal screw to hold a loose inner pipe shouldn't be a problem, but not sure how well it would hold there, or for how long. Welding would probably be your best option in the long run if the pipes have separated.

Concur with @flitecontrol and @01-7700, remove the pipes and inspect. rattling there could be the crush gasket, the split collar, the bracket, stretched studs and/or loose acorn nuts not holding it tight, or inner wall, or something else....


be very careful removing them, if they are original studs they will be rusted and heat fatigued and could snap easily...
