Shadow, I think I did exactly that when I went out and bought my Honda Shadow VT500... MUCH less beginner friendly and I'm having difficulty with it... Glad I kept the Rebel, such a joy to just get on it and ride and be in total control. I don't cruise enough at highway speeds to warrant the bigger, faster bike.

Very well put. 85 MPH seems enough for me, and I do go off road and parking lots just to improve my skills. Then I feel great and confident during regular rides. And to practice turns and braking this bike does plenty for me.

After running the Piglet at WOT for a looooong time and watching the actual GPS speed, I have my doubts that any Rebel will run 85 mph on flat level ground. I doubt mine runs with the best of them though, but the Piglet runs nominally at least. On flat level ground, I'm betting 76 mph is about all the Piglet is going to do. I'm ok with it. I didn't buy it for roadracing.

76 would look like 79 to 80 on the speedo. It's 3 or 4 mph optimistic at 75 mph speeds.

The Rebel isn't the only bike with an overly optimistic speedometer. That also applies to the VN750 with stock wheels.

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

I have a 2008 cbr600rr that I use to have fun up in the mountains, but other than that I really enjoy hopping on the 250 to head to a job, food shopping, and so on. There's just something really enjoyable about a small "just enough engine" bike that's easy to hop on and go, and super cheap to own. I guess the fact that it's a badass clock-work running engine that will last almost forever helps too. 1980s is when honda was in their prime for building extremely precise engines that will last. No way will the rebel 300 or 500 engine outlast the 250. Nice and quiet, but still screams like a badass when you need to get going. Bike sounds awesome shifting through the gears casually shifting at 15-30-40...taking 4th to 50, or 55 to get on the highway.

If I'm correct the new Rebel 300 is only one cylinder. Somehow I can't bring myself downgrading from 2 to 1.

That’s correct. The Rebel 500 is a twin.

I prefer our 250’s twin, but a single cylinder isn’t necessarily bad. And it’s liquid-cooled, which is nice....

I rode my 250 Rebel on the local parkway yesterday for the first time. This was the first time I’ve used 5th gear and gone over 45 mph. Cruising along at 50-55 mph was fantastic! Plenty of power and acceleration.

The parkway is at sea-level and has a 50 mph speed limit. So not the same as the interstate highways. But I am encouraged at how well it did. I can’t wait to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive, which have even lower speed limits. The Rebel will be perfect out there!

I rode my Shadow VT500 this morning for two hours. Then hopped on my 250 single cylinder Rebel and rode for another hour. Every bit if not more enjoyable cruising around at 45-50 MPH. Since I put the running boards on it has become a wonderful little Cruiser. If I were to cruise the highways around here (which is rare) I would probably still use the Shadow, but my day-to-day get my jollies rides will definitely be the Rebel. Just too much fun not to keep!

Good to hear so many riders with bigger bikes still enjoy using their Rebels.

Fyi, if it's a Rebel 250 - - it's a twin cylinder.

I’d say you are shifting far too soon and lugging the engine. Follow the indicated gear per speed on the speedo (yes as others have said). I am pleasantly surprised how much more mine has at 60mph although my expectations were very low. I love the fuel economy, drive very defensively anyway, and am happy with my Rebel as my one bike for all my needs. All that said... I’m still a newbie. 😂😂😂
