Cold Start Valve compatibility

Greetings Rebel Friends,

I'm working on my nieces 1985 Rebel and the choke isn't working well. I've yet to tear into it so I haven't isolated the exact issue, but in preparation I've been looking at parts lists so if I need to replace parts I know where to get them.

Looking at Bike Bandit and others online, I can't find the plunger or spring to the cold start valve. I know that the Rebel changed very little over 30+ years, but very little doesn't mean not at all. Does anyone know how much overlap there is over the years? Will a cold start valve for a 2000 fit a 1985? If necessary, will a carburetor from a 2000 or others also fit a 1985?

Thanks
-Bob

The second generation (1996-2016) carbs, unlike the first generation, bolt to the head. So no, you would need a carb from a 1985-87. Not sure about the valve, but suspect they will interchange.

Are you sure it's the fuel enrichment circuit (choke) and not a dirty carb?

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

It clearly has a dirty carb, though I'm hoping that Gumout will be able to clear that up, it's difficult to start but eventually I can get it to run. However, even after I get the engine idling at something sort of respectable the engine is running really rich. Couple this with that fact that I don't notice any difference between the CSV open or closed I'm thinking it's stuck open and not fully closing if at all. I'm hoping to find time to get into it tonight and see if the plunger is actually moving, I'm hoping it's just a little sticky and not a failed spring. But if the spring is failed or of the plunger is really corroded I may need to replace either or both.

Cheers

The starter valve is the same between 1st and 2nd gen - and you can get them on eBay.
