Bought 1986 Rebel 250

Hello everyone,

I made my intro earlier in the week knowing full well that I was going to get a rebel soon. I wanted to let you all know that I snagged a beauty just yesterday. She only has about 8K miles on her. There are some issues that I need to fix. I have been reading through all your helpful posts and found it to be incredibly useful. I am a complete novice when it comes to mechanics. Regardless, I don't trust the word that anyone says about the maintenance done bef. With getting a bike this old, is there anything other than the things below that you guys would do/check for? Thanks for the help!

Issues/todo:
- Broken rear turn signals
- Exhaust leak (very small hole)
- Oil leak coming from front left, appears to be from the stator cover gasket.
- Front turn signals don't work properly. Left turn light stays on but doesn't turn on the turn warning light. Opposite issue on right.
- Runs well but struggling a little when warming up (dirty carb?)
- Cracked spark plug housing on right plug
- Fresh oil, spark plugs, and air filter
- Tighten chain
- Add inline fuel filter
- License plate bulb burnt out
- Seat bolt loose

Some of these are really simple issues but I wanted to keep track of it all before I forget.

Break it down into individual items - the oil leak is primary from my perspective - get that sorted out before you work on the other issues

Very much agree on the oil issue. Thank you my friend! I'm going to out and shop for the tools needed.

The left side case cover has a weep hole in the bottom, and that side should be dry. If oil is dripping out of it, more than likely the seal on the shaft is leaking.

Keepin' all the left over parts. Gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Agree with flitecontrol left crank oil seal..
left side oil leak addressed in many posts here..

I always completely go through the brake systems..
Pop the pistons out of caliper, clean the accumulated gunk at the bottom, lube the slide pins.
Flush and clean master cylinder bore..

You will need to adjust rear brake after drive chain tightening..

96 VS800 Intruder (sold 2018 ), 87 CMX250C Rebel,
79 CB400 Hawk (sold 93), 75 CB350 (sold 83), 71 CB350 (stolen 74)

Thanks for the guidance! I didn't know about the rear brake adjustment. The front brakes is also a good idea.

I ended up doing some searching up on the oil issue and found a few posts about it. I have is I don't have the tools but I went to harbor freight too late and were already closed. I'll try again tomorrow.

Any recommendations on who to go for parts? I have found several sites but not sure if one supplier is better than the next.

Thanks again!

16mm x 1.5 bolt can be used as a flywheel puller..

some have pressed the seal back into case others have replaced ..
google "91201-402-015" for the best prices
35mm x 52mm x 7mm from any supplier would work as well

96 VS800 Intruder (sold 2018 ), 87 CMX250C Rebel,
79 CB400 Hawk (sold 93), 75 CB350 (sold 83), 71 CB350 (stolen 74)

And would be much cheaper than buying it from a Honda dealer.

much of which I have uploaded to google drive.. few other basic honda service manuals there too..

" Left turn light stays on but doesn't turn on the turn warning light. Opposite issue on right."
the signal indicator grounds through both left and right blinkers depending which direction is selected.. thus the right bulb is burned out..
shouldn't happen as indicator would ground through both front and rear bulbs But you said the rear isn't connected..

forgot to mention there is a drain hole in many a muffler.. if it's at the very bottom of muffler leave it alone..
