handlebar switch controls

Hey everyone. I'm new on here. I've just picked up a 1988 rebel. Hope I'm asking this in the right place.

So do the 96 and up switch controls fit my 1988?

Also this one's abit out there but it has apes on it. And the previous owner wired it really bad. So I've re done his extensions for the handle bars and the head light turns on hi and low. Park brake is working but nothing else. Bad earth?

Bendude, how easy was it to use the 1996 switchgear? Also, did you replace both left and right with 1996 parts? Asking because my '85 turn signals are not working and I plan to order 1996 left controls and hope that will solve everything.

Welcome to the forum 82nd.

Your post may have been caught in our spam filter.

I think they are interchangeable, but maybe someone who has done it before can chime in with a better answer.

Hope you get it working.

Generation 1 USA signal switch wiring,, Yours may differ

Turn signal circuit power at the switch is Gray wire originating from Turn Signal Relay.. Output is to Light Blue (right) and Orange (left) signal lamp circuits.. connect an ohm/multimeter Gray to Orange and Gray to Light Blue to test internal switch contacts..

Black wire is Ignition switched Battery power to Horn button outputs to Light Green horn wire

Blue/White originates from push button starter switch.. Power only when starter button released, with Ignition On is the head lamp power source output to White (low beam) Blue (high beam)

As you can see there are three sources of power to differing circuits in the Left switch assembly.
