whitewall tires?
On one thread a guy said that he found whitewall tires from a company called Maxxis I think, but that he bought the last ones. Does anybody know of any other company that maxes whitewall tires for the rebel?

rear tires shouldnt be a problem, the fronts will be though.

i had the exact opposite problem, got a front, not a rear. I dont think anybody makes direct fit white walls. The only front i could find is a dunlop 120/90-18, which is a good bit bigger than stock, and may be a tight squeeze if you have a front fender, the only rears i've seen are 150's which again are way wider than stock, but a little work, and anything will fit

I believe someone out there (Dunlop?) has a 140/90 rear tire. It is unfortunately nobody makes them in the stock sizes, or I would have them. There obviously isn't a market for them, tire companies will make what sells. Jerry.

Dunlop makes a D404 Wide White Wall 150/90-15 rear tire that will fit, although you may have to cut/grind down a couple of bolts under your rear fender, and remove the chain guard. I have no rear fender, thus I have no problem. As for front tires, the only one available in white wall is a 120/90-18, which some people have used, but it's huge! I really wanted to have both tires white walled but when I saw that tire I decided that it was too big. It's only 1cm narrower that the stock 130 rear tire, and way bigger. thats too much rotation weight for me. Although I believe I read somewhere that "Guba" has that tire and it works fine. Also you can always get whatever tire size you want and paint them, many people do that, in fact I still might do that to my front.

I don't see a problem with the 150/90 rear tire if you can make it fit. The chain must run pretty close to it. My Vulcan 750 has that size tire, and I couldn't imagine it on the Rebel. Finally I measured it, and it looks like if you installed it, it would be right up against the chain with it centered in the swingarm.
The front tire presents a whole bunch of problems. First thing I noticed when I had my fender off was just how weak the front forks were. You could hold the front wheel between your legs and turn the bars, and easily see the forks twist. And yes, the pinch bolts were tight. Add the extra size and weight of a large tire and things get worse. First, you have the aforementioned rotational mass. All that rotating weight puts a lot of stress on the forks, especially during turning and braking. Also, because the tire is physically bigger, it will be more resistant to turning, especially at low speeds, due to friction between the tire and the road. Every time you turn that huge front tire with those spindledy little forks, without the fender to brace them, the forks are going to twist, that is, the handlebars are going to turn more than the axle does. If you'll notice, bicycles with suspension forks have the fork lowers connected together at the top. There is a reason for that. It holds everything together. Otherwise, the forks would be twisting and flexing all over the place. Jerry.

i have a 120 on my front, no fender, and it handles and rides just fine. Sure you can twist the front end a little, but when is that much force really applied sideways to the front end. Handles a little different from stock, but after about 2 minutes in the seat, you're already used to it. Just my 2cents

I was running a 110/90/18 in front but hated the extra fork flex and bounce over small road flaws. After 6K miles I went back to 3.00X18 and love the ride quality again.
Also went back to blackwalls because the paint kept turning tan and didn't look right.
If I paint them again I'm going to try using a stain sealer as a primer to keep the flat white from turning tan.

Hey, I'm new to the site and don't have my bike yet. I'll be getting an 86 450 rebel. Already have the specific bike picked out and just hafta get a few things straight before picking it up.
I see the thread has been pretty stale, so sorry if I'm bringing up a dead topic...Thanks to JunkyardDog for the good points to consider on the front tire issue. I was really considering changing tire and/or rim if I could find a way, but now I may look at other options. I really want white walls to go with the scheme I wanna setup(B&W bobber). Has anyone gone with the Dunlop D404 WWW and a hand painted front white wall? Seems like the issue with fading would be even more obvious if you don't either buy whitewalls for both or hand paint both :-/ I'm going to search more on painting your own, but referencing what bB2NER said, if it fades to tan and the rear is a white wall from the factory...I would think the difference would be rather noticeable...do not want. Do people generally have pretty good luck with painting both white walls? I'm curious about how a stain sealer would work or if there's another to prevent fade and if there's a write up on that yet O.o Off to search, will check in from time to time. Thanks.
