Bike givin me a fit, cranks ,runs reves high and dies

Hi 250 afficiados ..I just bought a semi-basket case 1987 rebel 250. a freind and I have got it all together except we cant keep it running...we rebuilt the carb (the kit only came with gasket float needle and o-ring for said needle) cleaned up well also. changed oil and plugs also. The old girl will crank good and idle but then suddenly reves up ( WE never touched the throtle) ad dies. She will crank back after sitting a minuet or so . then same result . We are going bonkers Help

Sounds like maybe the enrichener is on. This is a cable operated valve controlled by a lever on the left handlebar. In normal operation you cold start with it on and no throttle. As the engine warms the revs go up and you ease the enrichener off.

Could also be a Vacuum line issue.

The 250 doesn't have any external vacuum lines, but its also possible there could be an air leak on the intake manifold joint if it's not sealed properly.

Check the petcock and internal tank screen and be sure you have plenty of fuel flow to the carb. It may be just running out of fuel, and revving up as it leans out right before stalling.

not all black hoses are vacuum lines.. what you saw and what you know are two different things..
@Duckster is correct the Rebel cmx250 carb has no external vacuum lines..
all carb hoses except fuel line (duh) vent to atmosphere..

Pick up an 18-24in length of 10mil fuel line from your friendly neighborhood shop. Pull the fuel line off the petcock and put this in its place and put the other end in a CLEAN gas tank, turn on the petcock and watch for a good flow that doesn't slow down.
