Form or function

Being a knifemaker, one learns that function is better than looks anyday. On Motorcycles, I've always loved the look of a stepped seat with sissybar and thought the look of the Bobbers were butt ugly. Since getting my Rebel, I've come to hate that Sissybar! Especially wearing all the gear and trying to hike my leg over. I think it would be much easier if that sissybar was gone!

There are times, I'll grant, the sissy bar does get in the way. It does, however serve a purpose on trips for me. It secures my throwovers and tail bag far better than running without it.

For me it is the stepped seat. Slap a nighthawk seat on a rebel and it would be a near perfect bike.

Have an extended backrest on the Vulcan and many decades on me. I've learned I can't swing my leg high enough to clear the backrest and just step through to get on. May not look manly, but it gets me where I want to go!

That's my problem too Flite, I have a bad back and swinging my leg sure is hard.

As for looks, the Kawasaki 454 LTD is about as pretty of a bike as I ever laid eyes on. The Virago that BuickGuy posted is mighty fine too!

Ive got a couple of ideas and I bet I can South Engineer something.

There's a simple solution here. Rather than swing your leg over and smashing your shin against the backrest, simply step over the seat instead as if you were "climbing" onto the bike.

That's what I do. Especially if my bag is strapped to the seat and bar.

Have a look at a F1 and I guess an Indy Car grid, take away the team livery, and you can't tell one car from another. If you punch all the same perameters into a wind tunnel computer you get close to the same result. "Form ever follows function".

Anyway, I digress; the Ballast won't ride on the back unless there is a sissy bar, something to do with a jack rabbit start a while back. We both step through rather than try and get our legs over, and this worked well until a pair of her new boots with an inside zipper left a scratch right across the seat. The boots are now banned for riding!

Has anyone designed either a quick detachable sissy bar or perhaps one that folds down when riding solo without luggage?
