If you increase the voltage you will decrease the amperage and create less heat across the contacts. We're only talking about a 1 to 1 1/2 voltage increase, but when you think about it that's around 10% increase.
But I do like the idea of putting a relay in that activates the headlight when the kickstand goes up. Wish I could remember who posted that, but it's a good idea.

I work with relays all the time on A/C equipment, so to me it just seems stupid to run major loads through tiny switches when you can use technology that has been around for a hundred years to put the serious amps where they belong. While I'm at it, Id like to add a headlight switch. (they are verboten in Tejas,I'd have to hide it for inspection)

Another thing I'd like to add, but I'm not sure if it's legal or not, is some small lights directed at the front wheel to reflect off the spokes and rims with a sorta cosmic strobe effect. I think it would add lots of night visibility

Buddy at work put LED lighting on his bike and it looked pretty cool. But he also had the chrome for the reflection effect. I wish someone out there would put out some chrome add ons and accessories specifically for the Rebel.

I have the stock chrome rims and spokes. I considered the little led strips that are sold everywhere, but I'd like to have a pair of small, bright bluish white spots mounted near the horn, aimed diagonally through the spokes so they would flash nearly every direction.

I'm no electrical wizard, but would these work for you?

There were some British LEDs made for bikes by bikers that I can't find. They were exactly what you say you are looking for.

Thanks for the links. The second one has a nifty gadget that sticks to the brake caliper that I think I might try. I've got to check about what colors are acceptable locally. I've heard that certain colors of lights are not permitted here, but I don't know the details.

Not sure about your regs, but most places frown on red and blue (brake and police car colors). Might be OK with anyting else.

Yup. And I've witnessed cops hand out fixit tickets for white lights used improperly. I really like blue, and for something reflecting off the front wheel, white would be okay too. My Honda stealership has leds on display for sale in many colors, including blue, but I don't take that as legal advice. I'll ask a cop or two when I get the chance. After all, it's not like the old days when I had to avoid being pulled over because I always had a bench warrant, or expired insurance or something.
