Newbie Question - Low Oil

I'm a new rider and new to this forum. While browsing I have seen a few threads asking about running on low oil. I understand running on low oil can cause problems but I'm not clear on what level is considered low and how long it takes to cause damage? This may be a dumb question but I'm new to riding and I'm trying to learn as much as possible up front.

As a side note - I love this forum. You all have answered a lot of my questions without me having to ask. Thanks.

Cat

I believe the correct way to check oil is with engine hot but shut off for a couple minutes, unscrew dipstick and wipe it off. Insert dipstick but DO NOT screw it in. Be sure it is sitting flat on the hole. Remove dipstick and if the level is between the HI and LOW marks, it's OK. I would not recommend EVER running the engine beyond those marks hi or low.
Something to consider: Does your engine leak or use oil? If it does and it is now down to the low mark yet, it might be a good idea to add a few ounces to keep it toward the high side.

Make sure your bike is upright, and on level ground when checking the oil level. A reading while leaning on the side stand will indicate being way low.
