is this mod just for pipes or would it work for the air filter as well?

I'm running straight pipes with an open air cleaner. I rejetted and shimmed. If you put on pipes or open the air box, you'll need to rejet at least. Either one will lean out the mixture. If you do something that requires a rejet and the bike still sputters after the rejet when you rip the throttle, then you need to shim. If the bike takes a long time to warm up, you need to go up on the slow jet size.

Would this be beneficial on a bike running stock pipes, with no mufflers?

You shouldn't need the setup AlabamaRebel used on his bike if you have the stock air filter. Maybe just turn the main jet out some more or go to the next larger jet and not shim. If you search the mods section of the forum and find a bike with a setup similar to yours, you could send the guy a PM and ask about their carb setup. Or they may see this post and chime in.

I don't know how you guys stand the sound of open pipes on a Rebel. I admit loud pipes on a Harley sound good to me, but open pipes on a Rebel just sound like a really loud lawn mower. Jerry.

I'm running shortie Emgos with steel freeze plugs in the ends drilled out to the stock outlet size. Sounds deeper and louder than stock without the weedwacker on steroids sound. It retains some of the backpressure so I didn't need to mess with the jetting.

this is a good mod for a stock bike because the factory leaned out the A/F ratio so it would be EPA friendly. i did this on a 2007 kaw zzr600 and it gave awesome results and only marginally hurt mpg. i plan on doing this on my dad's '03 rebel 250. you can't make power without burning gas! HTH

So what is the difference between jetting and shimming? What is the difference between their purposes? When should they be added in a mod, or what are the tell tale signs that it is needed?
