Can anyone tell me how to clean air filter for 1986 Honda Rebel 250

I am looking to clean the air filter for my 1986 Honda Rebel 250 which has been sitting since 10 yrs. I would like to know how to remove and clean it.

To remove it; pull the left side cover off, unscrew the airbox cover, The filter should have a spring holding it in on the back, unlatch the spring, disconnect the hose attached to it, remove the filter. As far as cleaning that filter....forget it. Go buy a new filter and foam element. At the very least, buy a new element.

Where do you purchase a foam element?
Thanks...

Honda dealer, Jacks Rebel Warehouse, possibly bikebandit.com, cheapcycleparts.com, ronayers.com, etc.

OR, go to a fabric shop or craft store and purchase a sheet of foam in the proper thickness. Cut it to fit the element, and hot glue the ends together. As long as the glue doesn't get sopping wet, it will hold. And, you'll have enough foam to do every filter on every pony in your stable.

You have a brand new Reb. The second generation Reb's don't have one. Unless your bent on putting one on yours.

If the holder is in good condition, the foam filter for the '85-'87 rebel is available almost anywhere. Bikebandit.com and cheapcycleparts.com have them. You can get the paper filter for the '96 and up from the same places. The size and shape of the paper filter look the same as the older foam filter/holder. Anybody know if a new filter will fit the old Rebel?

In any event, I recommend a stock filter. I do not recommend K&N air filters. They are advertised as "high performance" filters, which usually means they flow more air than the stock filter, which also means they flow more dirt. More airflow will also lean out your air/fuel mixture. Unless you are going with a pod type filter for looks, can live with the fact that it does not filter as well as a stock filter, and are willing to rejet the carb for it, there is no reason not to use stock. You are definitely not going to get any more power out of the Rebel engine. It is an overbuilt low output engine, which is why it lasts so long if properly maintained. Jerry.

Jerry.
Yes, it does.
Personally, I would and did opt for replacing the foam element.

In that case, I totally recommend to owners of older Rebels to use the new style stock air filter element, unless you are customizing and removing the airbox entirely. Stock filters are designed to filter, i.e. remove dirt better than aftermarket filters, and that's what counts. The Rebel is never going to be a muscle bike, so why not try and make it last as long as possible? Jerry.

Jerry, does the newer paper element do a better job of filtering that the classic's original foam air cleaner? If so, I'd prefer that as well. Even paying dealer price for the Honda replacement foam was only $9. The original did last me a good long time with regular care.
