Throttle questions

Hi,

I just bought my first motorcycle, a '87 Rebel 450, two days ago. I took the MSF rider course a month ago and rode a Rebel 250 during the course. The 450 I bought has less than 6000 miles on it. The PO rode it 2000 of those miles over the last 2 years. She had a Honda dealership replace the tires, a lot of the wiring, gaskets and seals, and clean the carb. They also worked on the exhaust, which had no baffles. The bike looks and runs very well.

Yesterday I rode around the neighborhood under 25 mph and put 3 miles on the odometer. I noticed that the throttle did not spring back like the new 250 I rode in the MSF course. I rode around town for 10 miles today and had to "roll off" the throttle the entire time. It seems to be sluggish when running, but it springs back when "parked" and off. Is this just the difference between a 2010 and a 1987, or should I have the throttle looked at?

Of course the engine performance will vary from an 87 and a new 10.

Maybe the spark plugs or carbs need checked?

Imo, performance loss on a bike that old is to be expected.

I would say it is the difference between the carb setup on the 250 versus the 450.
The 250 uses a single carb where the 450 uses twin carbs.
The twin carbs means there is linkage between them and sychronization that takes place.

And it may be something as simple as the throttle cable(s) needs to be lubricated.

I would tend to agree with flite...I had the same problem and fixed it by simply lubricating the throttle cable.

Music might also have an aftermarket throttle lock on it as well.
Lubing the cable is a good place to start for sure!

The cables should be lubed to help with the problem. but you might check the return spring between the carburetors below the where the cables attach to the carburetors. that might be sticking also. I have had a problem in the past with where the cables go into the hand grip and attach to the white throttle disk, it being real dirty and gummy and the throttle not returning because of that part needing to be cleaned and I use a silicone base lubricant on it so dirt doesn't stick to it again.
Hope this helps some.

Ride safe
