raising the seat for a tall rider

Iwas wondering if it is possible to raise the seat because i'm 6' 3" tall and I feel uncomfortable sitting on the seat and feet planted on the ground

The higher the seat the higher the center of gravity. People have been lowering all sorts of bikes but not raising them. Its good to have both feet planted on the ground from the seat with some extra. The ground is not always level at a stop light. I have seen people fall over when stopping on a slanted road because they could not get their foot down on one side and they were too high and had too much bike to handle for their size.

Welcome to the forum, dadcarvell. A member here posted a seat modification a while back, but I can't remember if it allowed raising it. I'll see if I can find it and post it here. Most folks leave the seat height as is and install forward controls for more leg room. As regularman posted, raising the seat will also raise the center of gravity somewhat.

I altered a stock seat by adding extra padding, but the original pad was so hard that it wasn't very comfortable. My next project is a padded slipcover. I've been waiting to make it until I found a suitable material for an affordable price, which I think I did. I hope to make it within the next few weeks. It should raise my butt two inches, with a taper in the back to allow for the tailbone plate. If all goes to plan, I should be able to slide partly onto the pillion to stretch my legs.

I'm 6' even, with a 34" inseam. I don't have any problems with putting my feet on the ground, but keeping my feet on the pegs was causing some pretty severe pain. My first idea was to raise the seat about 4", by having a local shop rebuild it 4" thicker. But I abandoned that idea, it would have me sitting up too high on the bike, and it would look terrible. I finally settled on relocating the pegs, shifter, and brake 4" further forward, and all is well now. The seat is also more comfortable, because moving my legs forward allowed me to sit on the seat differently. I can now ride all day with only minor pain, from the seat. Jerry.

I have never modified a seat from a Rebel, But I have from a 600 vlx, 750 ACE, and several others. I you have any sewing skills such as cutting and pining, a piece of naugahyde and different types of foam can be purchased at most any fabric store. I started by removing the seat cover and then adding or removing foam to make the seat fit correctly. Cover with some heavy plastic and duct tape it to the seat pan and take for a spin to check the comfort and fit. (there are many seat mod clips on u-tube to get shaping ideas) I would then take apart the seat cover and use as a pattern cutting the naugahyde an inch long on the sewn parts and 3 inches on the area to be stapled to the pan. Pin up the new pieces short of the actual place it will need to be stitched, check fit, adjust. When I am satisfied the new cover is the right fit, just large and a little baggy, I take it to a local shoe repair store and have it sewed up on the side of the pins that will make a tight fit. Now trim up the sewn edges , neatly recover the seat foam with heavy plastic and tape to seat pan then re-attach the new cover to the seat pan and trim up the extra.

Hello, How did you go about moving the controls forward? I'm 6ft.2in. with the same problem, only I also have a bad back to ad to the mix, I have all the tools needed, They don't make a kit I'm sure? Getting started on the right foot would help, Many thanks for some starter ideas on the move, also have you heard of a Back Rest for Driver? I have a 2003 250cc Rebel Saddle Bags and Windshield, a couple extra lights on rear, I look like I am ridding a mini bike the way I have to sit on it, lol Thanks SmallblockAndy

Andy, look in the mod or wrenching sections of the forum. Folks have posted pictures and descriptions of their forward controls there.

Yeah, there is no "kit" to relocate the pegs/controls on a Rebel, YET. I have sent CAD files of my design to 3 different companies, and have not heard from any of them yet. This is a very easy modification to make, and could be built by a number of companies and sold for a reasonable price. It uses most of the stock parts. Since the Rebel seating position is WAY too cramped for most 5'10" and up riders, it seems they could sell a lot of these. Jerry.
